Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar on Wednesday said an amount of Rs 181 crore has been released to the farmers who have suffered rabi crop damage due to unseasonal rains. The chief minister has transferred this compensation directly into the accounts of the farmers through e-Kshatipurti portal, according to an official statement. The crops had been damaged due to unseasonal rains in the state in March-April this year. Recently, Khattar conducted a whirlwind tour of the rain-hit villages to assess the damage to crops due to rain. "We had conducted a special survey of crop damage, according to which the damage was reported in 2.09 lakh acres in 18 districts. The area under coverage for summer crops is marginally down so far at 65.29 lakh hectares, according to the agriculture ministry data. The sowing area under rice and oilseeds is less, while the acreage of pulses and coarse cereals is higher, the data showed. The ministry on Monday released the progress of area coverage under summer crops as of April 28, 2023. As per the data, the area under coverage for rice stood at 27.45 lakh hectares so far against 29.14 lakh hectares in the year-ago period. Pulses acreage rose to 17.57 lakh hectare from 16.23 lakh hectares, while sowing area of coarse cereals increased to 10.86 lakh hectares from 10.19 lakh hectares. The Punjab Cabinet on Friday gave nod to 25 per cent hike in compensation for crop loss because of vagaries of weather. A decision to this effect was taken by the council of ministers in the Cabinet meeting chaired by chief minister Bhagwant Mann, said an official statement. Keeping in view the loss incurred by the farmers recently due to heavy rains, hailstorms and strong winds, the Cabinet has decided to enhance the relief amount from Rs 12,000 per acre to Rs 15,000 per acre for 76 to 100 per cent for loss of crops. This measure will give a healing touch to the affected farmers who will be able to get a reasonable financial relief from the government. The relief rate will be applicable from March 1, it said.
