Dark side of tech: AI-driven cyberattacks call for better security measures

In a world increasingly reliant on technology, cybercriminals are misusing artificial intelligence (AI) to execute sophisticated attacks, posing significant threats to individuals and organisations alike, according to an expert. Recent high-profile data breach reports involving Star Health exemplify this alarming trend, highlighting the urgent need for upgraded cybersecurity measures. In a conversation with PTI, Sneha Katkar, Head of Strategy and Product Custodian for the cybersecurity firm Quick Heal's antivirus lineup, pointed out that the landscape of cybercrime has undergone significant evolution. "Cyber criminals today are not operating manually; they are using AI to automate attacks. They are using artificial intelligence to actually conduct these attacks. It's so sophisticated in nature that the best of the best fall prey to it," she noted. This automation allows them to bypass traditional security measures, making it challenging for even the most robust systems to defend ..

No chance of foreign adversary to change US election results: CISA head

Security for America's election systems has become so robust that Russia, Iran or any other foreign adversary will not be able to alter the outcome of this year's presidential race, the head of the nation's cybersecurity agency said Wednesday. Jen Easterly told The Associated Press in an interview that voting, ballot-counting and other election infrastructure is more secure today than it's ever been. Malicious actors, even if they tried, could not have an impact at scale such that there would be a material effect on the outcome of the election, said Easterly, director of the US Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency. Federal agencies have warned of growing attempts by Russia and Iran in particular to influence voters before the November 5 election and election conspiracy theories have left millions of Americans doubting the validity of election results. Easterly said those efforts are primarily aimed at sowing discord among Americans and undermining faith in the security

Security agencies detect phishing fraud that mimics MoD's official website

Indian cyber-security agencies have detected a phishing fraud that "mimics" the official website of the Ministry of Defence to "harvest" the log-in credentials of officials to "steal" sensitive government documents. An advisory issued this week by the National Informatics Centre (NIC) has identified two phishing links -- mod.gov.in.aboutcase.nl/publications.html and mod.gov.in.army.aboutcase.nl/publications.html. The communication has been accessed by PTI and it says both the URLs seek NIC-provided log-in credentials of government officials through a fake e-mail that comes attached with a "fake" document titled "Hackers Targeted Defence Personnel in Mass Cyber Attack". Once individual credentials like log-in IDs and passwords are punched, the links re-direct the users to a "login-error.html" page. "Both the phishing URLs have mirrored the original MoD website (www.mod.gov.in) to lure end users into believing they are legitimate MoD websites," the communication says. The two links

Cybersecurity is more than protecting personal data: Isro chief Somnath

In this era, when infrastructure built over the years is vulnerable to cyber attacks, it is very important to build an ecosystem to develop cyber security tools and solutions, Indian Space Research Organisation Chairman S Somanath said on Thursday. He laid the foundation stone for 'Cyber Nalanda', a state-of-the-art cyber security research and development centre, the brainchild of SISA, a global forensics-driven cybersecurity solutions company, that is coming up in Bengaluru. "I was from a generation of engineers who started their career without knowing computers. The transitioning from that time to now has been tremendous," said Somanath. According to him, at one point, security was nothing but anti-virus. "But now, as applications are expanding, threats are also expanding. Cyber security threat is not limited to theft of personal data alone. It is now at a much greater scale -- it is also to do with the security of the nation itself," said Somanath. He pointed out that the vario

Sebi releases new cyber security framework for regulated entities

Markets watchdog Sebi on Tuesday issued a new cyber security framework wherein all regulated entities are required to have appropriate security monitoring mechanisms, and the fresh norms will be implemented in a graded manner starting from January 2025. Besides, a Cyber Capability Index (CCI) for market infrastructure institutions and qualified regulated entities will be introduced to monitor and assess their cybersecurity maturity and resilience on a regular basis. The Cybersecurity and Cyber Resilience Framework (CSCRF), formulated after consultations with stakeholders, comes at a time when there are rising instances of cyber attacks. The framework will supersede the existing cybersecurity circulars and guidelines for the entities regulated by Sebi, according to a circular. For small regulated entities, Sebi said that stock exchanges NSE and BSE will establish market Security Operation Centres (SOCs) to assist them in meeting the requirements under the new framework.
