Delhi's AQI came down to the 'moderate' category on Wednesday evening, with this period of relief expected to continue for the next two to three days
Delhi breathed clean air on Wednesday after a gap of 50 days as the air quality was recorded in the 'moderate' category, offering much-needed respite from the high levels of pollution. The 24-hour average Air Quality Index (AQI) of the city was recorded at 178 at 4 pm, registering an improvement from 268 on Tuesday. Earlier, the AQI was recorded in the 'moderate' category with a reading of 198 on October 15. However, the AQI had deteriorated and shifted to the 'poor' category the following day, according to Central Pollution Control Board data. Speaking about the improved air quality, an official of the India Meteorological Department said strong surface winds were forecast in the city on Wednesday. The winds will blow till December 7 when a new western disturbance is expected, which will lead to moderate fog starting December 8. Of the 38 air quality monitoring stations in the city, only Sri Aurobindo Marg reported air quality in the 'very poor' category on Wednesday, while eight

The plea stated that the impugned order, dated October 9 this year issued by the Special Court, directed the ED to supply copies of the uninspected and un-relied upon documents
The Delhi High Court on Wednesday sought the responses of several AAP leaders, including Arvind Kejriwal, and BRS leader K Kavitha on the ED's plea challenging a trial court's order directing it to supply "unrelied documents" to those accused in the alleged money laundering case related to the excise policy. Justice Manoj Kumar Ohri issued notices to all the 40 accused on the Enforcement Directorate's (ED) petition as well as its application for stay in the case. The high court listed the matter for further hearing on January 30 next year. Besides former Delhi chief minister Kejriwal, AAP leaders Manish Sisodia and Sanjay Singh and several businessmen are among the accused in the case. In November, the trial court directed the ED to supply the chargesheet and the digitised records of the remaining "unrelied documents" (those which are not used by the prosecution to support their case) to the persons accused in the case. The ED counsel said the trial court had given the ED directio
The Congress will provide free electricity up to 400 units a month if it assumes power in Delhi, the party's city chief Devender Yadav said on Tuesday. Yadav said in a statement that the Congress would also implement strict checks and balances to stop discoms from "looting" consumers with inflated power bills. The AAP-led Delhi government currently provides free electricity up to 200 units a month. Addressing participants at the Delhi Nyay Yatra in the Kirari assembly segment, Yadav said the Congress fulfilled all its election promises in every state the party assumed power. However, AAP supremo Arvind Kejriwal only devised excuses for his failure to execute the free schemes and blamed the lieutenant governor and others for his own incompetence to translate words into action, he alleged. Kejriwal had promised to transform Delhi into Paris and London. He had claimed before the 2022 Municipal Corporation of Delhi elections that AAP would clear the three garbage mounds in the nationa
The Delhi government decided on Tuesday to pay financial assistance of Rs 8,000 to each of the over 90,000 registered workers affected by the construction ban in the city due to severe air pollution. The construction ban was imposed on November 18 under the Graded Response Action Plan measure to check pollution. According to officials, the decision was taken at a meeting of the Delhi Building and Other Construction Workers Welfare Board chaired by additional chief secretary (finance) Ashish Chandra Verma. The move comes in the wake of a recent Supreme Court direction to the chief secretaries of NCR states to appear before it through video-conferencing on December 5 and inform whether or not any subsistence allowance was paid to the construction workers who went without work owing to the restrictions. An official document stated the Board "resolved" that an ex gratia amount of Rs 8000 may be released to all eligible construction workers after due verification of their status as ...
The BJP on Tuesday cited the conviction of AAP MLA Mehrauli Naresh Yadav in a case of desecration of the Quran in Punjab to accuse the party of going to any extent in its alleged greed for power. BJP spokesperson Shazia Ilmi told reporters that another AAP MLA, Naresh Balyan, was recently arrested by the Delhi Police on extortion charges, as she hit out at party leader Arvind Kejriwal. "Be it extorting money or stoking communal passion, such shrewd minds and such a party in its greed for power can go to any extent," she alleged. Ilmi, who was once with AAP before falling out with Kejriwal, said Delhi's ruling party says all kinds of things to get Muslim votes but its MLA conspires to defile the Quran in Punjab. Kejriwal's friend and Samajwadi Party leader Akhilesh Yadav should also talk about it, she said. "This party (AAP) has crossed all limits and come to a dangerous place," Ilmi said, adding that it is now up to the people to decide to get rid of such leaders. Ilmi suggested
The Delhi High Court will hear on December 9 a plea by the city's opposition leaders seeking a direction to place Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) reports related to liquor duty, pollution and finance before the Assembly. Justice Sanjeev Narula on Monday deferred hearing on the petition while noting that the pleadings in the case were not yet complete. While the counsel appearing for the petitioners stressed that the matter was urgent as the current Assembly session would lapse on December 4, the lawyer for the Delhi government said this was "not the last session". Senior advocate Sudhir Nandrajog, appearing for the Delhi government, said a reply to the petition was being prepared as the matter was earlier scheduled to come up on December 9. Even if the current session ended, the lieutenant governor has the power to re-convene it, he said. "This is not the last session and is not even the last assembly in Delhi. The term of the Assembly is till February and the convening of t

Discoms in Delhi have filed petitions with power regulator DERC for a "cost-reflective" tariff to be announced for this fiscal, citing a combined revenue gap of more than Rs 3,000 crore in 2022-23. The Delhi Electricity Regulatory Commission (DERC) has started the process for determining power tariff for consumers for the 2024-25 fiscal. Electricity rates in Delhi have remained static since 2014. The commission has uploaded the options for the power companies on its website, seeking comments from stakeholders, including consumers, to consider while making a decision on the new rates. The petitions showed that the revenue requirement in 2022-23 was Rs 12,116 crore for BSES Rajdhani Power Limited (BRPL), Rs 6,141 crore for BSES Yamuna Power Limited (BYPL) and Rs 9,264 crore for Tata Power Delhi Distribution Limited (TPDDL). However, the revenue at the existing tariff was Rs 10,419 crore for BRPL, Rs 5,530 crore for BYPL and Rs 8,410 crore for TPDDL, resulting in a revenue gap of Rs
AAP convener Arvind Kejriwal on Sunday ruled out the possibility of an alliance between his party and the Congress for the Delhi Assembly elections, setting the stage for a triangular contest in the polls due in February. This comes a day after Delhi Congress president Devendra Yadav said the party would go it alone in the assembly elections. "There will be no alliance in Delhi," Kejriwal said at a press conference here. AAP and Congress are part of the opposition INDIA bloc and fought the Lok Sabha elections in Delhi together earlier this year. Both parties drew a blank, with the BJP winning all seven seats. Over a week ago, AAP released its first list of 11 candidates, including six leaders who switched from BJP and Congress recently, for the Delhi polls. Reacting to Kejriwal's announcement, Yadav said the Congress is "very clear" that it will not have any alliance with AAP and will contest all the 70 assembly seats in Delhi on its own. The alliance with AAP did "great harm" to
