Rules under Post Office Act to be issued in 6 months, says secretary

The Department of Posts will issue rules and regulations under the Post Office Act 2023 in the next six months, a top official of the department said on Thursday. While speaking on the sidelines of Department of Posts Officers' Conclave 2024, Secretary Vandita Kaul told PTI that the new rules will bring transformation in the postal services with the use of modern technologies. "We are now going to issue rules and regulations within six months. The subordinate legislation has to come out. This (India Post Office Act 2023) law has simplified what was a very old archaic law which was relevant at its time, but not now," she said. IT modernisation of Postal Department has costed Rs 445 cr so far: Govt

Expenditure to the tune of Rs 445.4 crore has been incurred so far this fiscal for the IT modernisation project of the Department of Posts, Parliament was informed on Friday. IT modernisation project 2.0 was approved in February 2022 by the government for the continuation of the technology project in the Department of Posts with a total outlay of Rs 5,785 crore for eight years, Minister of State for Communications Devusinh Chauhan said in a written reply in Rajya Sabha. The expenditure for 2022-23 stood at Rs 1,087.48 crore, and for 2023-24 (so far), it was Rs 445.41 crore. The IT modernisation project is implemented centrally pan-India, and hence state-wise expenditure is not applicable, the minister said. Quantifiable targets achieved in the last five years include central connectivity of the Post Office network through a dedicated Wide Area Network. Dept of Posts to appoint CEO, COO for payments bank

The Department of Posts is planning to set up a board and appoint chief executive officer and chief operating officer of the India Post Payments Bank (IPPB) in the next 45 to 60 days and has already written to some public sector banks (PSBs) to nominate their executive director level or board members for the same.The IPPB, set to be operational by March next year starting with 50 branches, will also come out with a request for proposal (RFP) in a few days to invite bids for selection of a technology partner.The bank, which will expand its branch strength to 650 by September 2017, also plans to hire around 2,000 employees. Also, post offices across the country will have a separate counter for the bank where postal employees will act as business correspondents.The board will comprise nine members, of which five will be independent and the remaining four will be in-house representatives.
