Direct selling major Amway expects India to be among its top three global markets in the next five years, the company's country Managing Director Rajneesh Chopra said on Monday. The company, which has invested USD 4 million (around Rs 35 crore) to set up four new research and development centres in India, is also looking to develop products to cater to Southeast Asian countries. Amway has globally started looking at the overall landscape and the lens of business in a very different way. Instead of setting financial goals only, it is moving to transformation of lives, Chopra told PTI. "We have five and a half lakh active distributors on our base right now. India has moved up to 11th position in the ranking of top markets of direct sellers, with retail sales of USD 3.23 billion (around Rs 26,852 crore) in 2022, global industry body WFDSA said in a report. Indian direct selling has registered a growth of 5.4 per cent over 2021 retail sales, said the World Federation of Direct Selling Association (WFDSA) report. On a constant dollar basis, the Indian market attained the highest Compounded Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of over 13.3 per cent during the last three years, it added. The global direct selling industry reported a decline of 1.5 per cent in 2022 to USD 172.89 billion. The top market in the list was the US with USD 40.52, with a decline of 5 per cent over 2021, it said. It was followed by Korea, Germany, China, Japan and Malaysia. Karnataka, with sales of Rs 1,128 crore, has topped the direct selling market in the southern region, according to the annual survey report by the Indian Direct Selling Association (IDSA). Providing self-employment to 78,000 entrepreneurs in Karnataka, including 34,000 women, the direct selling business in the State posted a sales increase of Rs 94 crore in 2021-22, a 9.09 per cent growth over the previous year's figure of Rs 1,034 crore, the self-regulatory body for the direct selling industry in India said. The State had a share of 5.9 per cent of the overall national sales, which stood at over Rs 19,030 crore during the period, the survey noted. During 2021-22, the State also contributed nearly Rs 170 crore to the exchequer by way of taxes, it was stated.
