Criminal probe opened into deadly Kazakh arms depot blast

Kazakhstan's president said Tuesday a criminal investigation has been opened into a munitions depot blast that killed two people and left 165 injured in a town in the south of the country. Authorities evacuated Arys, a town of 40,000 people, following Monday's blast which the defence ministry said was caused by a fire which caused ammunition to explode. Social media users shared videos of residents fleeing the area, where properties were damaged, as huge plumes of smoke rose in the background. Kazakhstan's Prime Minister Askar Mamin said Tuesday during a government meeting that "one civilian and one serviceman" were killed and 165 people had sought treatment. Minor daughter of Indian imam killed in UAE road accident

Two-year-old daughter of an Indian imam died in UAE, over a week after she sustained serious injuries in a road accident when the car she was travelling in with her parents veered off and flipped several times, according to a media report. The accident occurred at the Al Rams area in the emirate of Ras Al Khaimah, 114 kms from here, on June 14. The critically injured trio were rushed to hospital where the condition of the parents improved, while the girl breathed her last on Saturday, the Khaleej Times reported. "The little girl, Zulfa, received injuries when the car driven by her father, who works as a mosque imam in Ras Al Khaimah, turned over several times," police said, adding that the father, mother and the child were injured in the accident. Prasad Sreedharan, a social worker affiliated with a medical committee recently constituted by the Consulate General of India (CGI) in Dubai, said the child had a head injury which impacted her brain. Hitting out at the BJP, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said while Tuesday was the anniversary of the Emergency imposed in 1975, the country is going through "super emergency" for the past five years. Emergency was imposed by then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi on this day in 1975 which was in effect till March 21, 1977. "Today is the anniversary of the Emergency declared in 1975. Unauthorised drone flying hit Changi airport operations

Flight operations at the international Changi Airport here were affected due to unauthorised drone activities, days after one of its runways was shut down due to unmanned aircraft sightings, according to a media report. The Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore (CAAS) told Channel News Asia (CNA) that approximately 15 departures and three arrivals were delayed, while seven flights were diverted on Monday. Last week, 38 flights were affected when drones were sighted in the vicinity of the airport, forcing one of its runways to shut down. "As a precautionary measure, arrival and departure flights were carefully regulated for short periods of time between 8.07pm and 9.07pm," the CAAS said. One of those affected was Singapore Airlines which diverted its flight scheduled from Jakarta to Singapore on Monday night. Indian killed in hit-and-run collision in US

A 26-year-old Indian driver has been killed in a major hit-and-run collision in the US State of California, according to a media report. Syed Waseem Ali, who hailed from Hyderabad and lived in Fremont, was driving the Toyota and had Sela Henriquez as the passenger via the Lyft ride-hailing service, who were pronounced dead after the crash in San Francisco's Bayview District on Sunday, the SFGate reported. The city's medical examiner's office has identified Ali and Henriquez, 49, of San Francisco, as the victims who died in the collision reported at about 1:15 a.m. Sunday at Third Street and Paul Avenue, the report added. A silver Mercedes-Benz was speeding on Third Street and did not stop at a red light at the Paul Avenue intersection, causing a collision with a silver Toyota sedan, police said. Jharkhand: 6 dead, 43 injured as bus falls into gorge in Garhwa

At least six people were killed and forty-three injured after a bus fell into a gorge of Annaraj Valley in Jharkhand's Garhwa district during early hours on Tuesday.The officials told ANI that dead bodies of six passengers have been fished out of the gorge while some are still stuck inside the bus."Police broke the windows and evacuated passengers stuck inside the bus. 43 people have been rescued in injured condition and 6 dead bodies have been fished out," said Shivani Tiwari, Superintendent of Police (SP), Garwha district."Some of the injured have been admitted to Sadar Hospital while others who sustained grievous injuries have been referred to hospitals in Ranchi", she added.The sleeper bus departed from Chhattisgarh and was travelling towards Garhwa district of Jharkhand. 6 dead, 43 injured as bus falls into gorge in Jharkhand

At least six people were killed and 43 injured on Tuesday when a bus fell into a gorge at Anuraj Ghati in Garhwa district, police said. The accident took place around 3.30 am, they said. CRPF jawans recovered the bodies of six people and rescued 43 passengers by entering the ill-fated bus through the windows, Superintendent of Police Shivani Tiwari told PTI. While three of the injured were referred to the Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences in Ranchi, the rest were admitted to a local hospital, the SP said. The bus was heading to Garhwa, about 140 km from state capital Ranchi, from Ambikapur in Chhattisgarh, she said.

Russian, North American astronauts to return to earth

The first crew to blast off to the International Space Station following a launch accident that deepened doubts over Russia's space programme is set to return to earth Tuesday. NASA astronaut Anne McClain, veteran cosmonaut Oleg Kononenko of Roscosmos, and Canadian Space Agency record-holder David Saint-Jacques are expected to touch down on the steppes of Kazakhstan at around 0248 GMT. The trio's launch on December 3 was the first after a Soyuz rocket carrying Russia's Aleksey Ovchinin and US astronaut Nick Hague failed in October just minutes after blast-off, forcing the pair to make an emergency landing. They escaped unharmed but the failed launch was the first such incident in Russia's post-Soviet history and a new setback for the country's once proud space industry.

Truck driver charged with 7 homicides in motorcycle crash

The driver of a truck in a fiery collision on a rural New Hampshire highway that killed seven motorcyclists was charged Monday with seven counts of negligent homicide. Volodymyr Zhukovskyy, 23, was arrested Monday morning at his home in West Springfield, Massachusetts, on a fugitive from justice charge related to Friday's crash, the New Hampshire attorney general's office said. Scores feared dead in Nigeria pipeline explosion

Scores are feared dead following an oil pipeline explosion in southeastern Nigeria, officials said Monday, with some putting the toll at more than 70. At least eight people died on Saturday in Kom Kom Town in the oil-producing Rivers State, according to an assessment Sunday by the police and a local official. But locals were "putting the figures at over 70" people killed, the regional coordinator of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Walson Brandon told AFP on Monday. Fire at CBI Academy in Ghaziabad

A fire incident has been reported from the CBI Academy in Ghaziabad late on Monday evening, officials said. The mess on the first floor of the academy, which also houses a recreational room with billiards table among others, caught fire causing serious damage, officials told PTI. A Hyderabad youth was killed in a road accident in the United States on Sunday (GMT).The man was identified as Syed Waseem Ali, who used to live in Walnut Ave."Syed Waseem Ali was travelling in a car along with another person yesterday. Caught in wrong lane, BJP leader's SUV driven for 200 metres with homeguard jawan on bonnet

A homeguard jawan was driven for about 200 metres on the bonnet of an SUV, belonging to a BJP leader, after he tried to stop the vehicle as it was plying on the wrong side of the road here, witnesses said. BJP leader Satish Khola, who was inside the vehicle when the incident happened on Monday, said there was no "intention to do anything deliberately". The incident was captured by people on their mobile phones and some videos have gone viral on social media. Leader of Opposition in Delhi Assembly Vijender Gupta's wife Shobha Vijender was robbed off her belongings near Mandi House in Lutyen's Delhi on Monday morning allegedly by some unidentified persons, police said. IndiGo Mum-Jaipur flight makes emergency landing after oil

Passengers on board an IndiGo Jaipur-bound flight from here survived a mid-air scare Saturday after the pilots was forced to shut one of its engines due to suspected oil leakage, a source said Monday. The flight landed under full emergency conditions, a he said. During the cruise at 31,000 ft, the flight crew after noticing tank fuel quantity getting reduced, declared Mayday call on board the flight to Jaipur air traffic control and sought emergency landing, he said. Every Pachayat Samiti in Rajasthan to have road safety volunteers

Every Panchayat Samiti in the state will have 50 road safety volunteers who will assist the administration in case of road accident or traffic jam, Rajasthan Transport Minister Pratap Singh Khachariyawas said Monday. The volunteers will be given road safety training by the transport department and NGOs. They will also be given special monogram and helmets, Khachariyawas told reporters here. The decision was taken in the meeting of the state road safety council on Monday. He also said that efforts will be made by the transport department to bring the number of road accidents down. In the meeting, he asked the officials to enhance public awareness on road safety by making optimum use of social media. He also laid stress on associated groups of youths for road safety. Two survivors, three bodies pulled from collapsed Cambodia building

Two men were pulled alive from the rubble of a collapsed Cambodian building on Monday, more than two days after a construction site accident that left at least 28 dead. Two Eurofighter jets collide over northern Germany

Two Eurofighter jets of the German Airforce collided mid-air on Monday over country's northern state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.The collision took place shortly before 2:00 am (local time) over the Mueritz region, about 100 kilometres north of country's capital Berlin.
