We grant bail, you become minister next day: SC slams DMK's Senthil Balaji

Expressing its concern over the appointment of DMK leader V Senthil Balaji, as a minister in the Tamil Nadu government days after he was granted bail in the money laundering case related to the cash-for-job scam, the Supreme Court on Monday agreed to examine a plea raising apprehensions on independence of witnesses in the case. A bench of Justices Abhay S Oka and Augustine George Masih, however, refused to interfere with the September 26 order of the apex court granting bail to Balaji on a plea filed by one of the complainants seeking its cancellation. "We granted you bail and days after you go and become minister. Anybody will be bound to be under the impression that now with your position as a senior cabinet minister, witnesses will be under pressure. What is this going on?" the bench asked senior advocate Mukul Rohatgi, appearing for Balaji. The bench, however, said it would not recall the September 26 order as the law laid down by the apex court was benefitting several other ...

Swearing-in of senior DMK MLA K Ponmudy as minister likely on Friday

The swearing-in of senior DMK MLA K Ponmudy as a minister was likely on Friday, a day after the Supreme Court pulled up Tamil Nadu Governor R N Ravi over the matter, sources indicated. While there was no immediate official word on the matter, sources said the swearing-in of Ponmudy was likely to be held this afternoon. On Thursday, the apex Court had voiced "serious concern" over the conduct of Ravi for his refusal to reinduct Ponmudy as a minister in the state cabinet even after it suspended his earlier conviction. The SC had directed the Governor to decide on the issue within 24 hours. The Governor had refused to reinduct Ponmudy, whose conviction and three-year sentence in a disproportionate assets case the apex court stayed recently, despite Chief Minister M K Stalin's recommendation.

SC refuses to interfere with AIADMK resolution expelling OPS, his aides

The Supreme Court on Friday refused to interfere with a Madras High Court order rejecting pleas of O Panneerselvam and his supporters against the AIADMK general council resolution expelling them from the party. A bench of Justices Sanjiv Khanna and Dipankar Datta told senior advocate K K Venugopal and other senior counsel appearing for Panneerselvam and his supporters that it is not inclined to interfere with the high court order. The bench said interfering with the resolution would amount to allowing the suit pending before the civil court. "If we interfere at this juncture, it will create huge chaos. To us it appears, there is a split, it will work itself out. Sometimes, it's better to let things work themselves out. Sorry, we are not inclined to interfere with the high court order," the bench said. The top court, however, directed for expeditious hearing of the pending suits and gave liberty to Panneerselvam (OPS) and his aides to move application for consolidation of all the .

Reject ONGC's hydrocarbon exploration wells project in TN: Parties to govt

Political parties in Tamil Nadu demanded the state government to reject the ONGC's proposal for setting up hydrocarbon exploration wells at 20 places in the coastal Ramanathapuram district. The ruling DMK should refuse the permission sought by the ONGC from the Tamil Nadu Environment Impact Assessment Authority, as the move would affect the groundwater and large agricultural land, said AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami. During his rule in the state, he declared the Cauvery Delta districts as protected agricultural zones so that Tamil Nadu is never affected by such toxic projects. "Considering the welfare of the people, I insist that the permission should be refused. @AIADMKOfficial," Palaniswami said in a post on the social media platform "X". Opposing the project, PMK founder Dr S Ramadoss said the move would convert the district into a desert. Hydrocarbons would be extracted from a depth of 3,000 feet and the extraction technology will result in earthquakes, he ...

Dravidian model is for equality, women empowerment, says CM Stalin

The nation's growth is in the hands of women and all-round efforts are being made by the DMK regime for their empowerment, Chief Minister M K Stalin said here on Wednesday. The Dravidian model growth is all inclusive and it includes both men and women. Nothing is planned by excluding women, Stalin said in his International Women's Day address at the Ethiraj College for Women. The initiative to appoint aspirants from all castes as priests in temples includes a woman as well and that is Dravidian model. Following the footsteps of reformist leaders, initiatives and schemes for women empowerment were being implemented by the DMK government, Stalin said and added that the nation's growth is in the hands of women. Equal rights for women in family properties (1989) and present increase in reservation for women in government jobs to 40 percent from 30 percent featured in a list of initiatives underlined by the Chief Minister. The Dr Muthulakshmi Maternity Benefit Scheme aimed at ensuring

Why raising Adani issue is equivalent to questioning India: DMK's Kanimozhi

DMK MP Kanimozhi on Tuesday demanded that the government clarify how raising allegations against the Adani Group could be equivalent to 'questioning' India, while hitting out at the ruling dispensation for "shielding" corporates. Participating in the debate on Motion of Thanks to the President's Address in Lok Sabha, she said any mention of Adani meant the treasury benches would break into virulent protests. She also accused the treasury benches of turning a blind eye and providing strong support to corporates even when their "wrong-doings" come to the fore. "... Hindenburg Research has given reports on 15 other institutions in different countries. But no other country has said that the report was against the country. "When we are talking about Adani, it becomes against the country. I am confused. We have started calling India 'Bharat', now what is the next progress? If talking against Adani is talking against India, I really want a clarification," Kanimozhi asserted. The Thoothuk

Tamil Nadu guv speaking like RSS: DMK on remarks over Dravidian identity

Tamil Nadu Governor R N Ravi's assertion that the concept of Dravidian covers the people of southern states but it has now become a Tamil identity due to politics of division, was dismissed by the ruling DMK as a statement coming from a "RSS man" and not from one holding a gubernatorial position. The opposition AIADMK, however, endorsed the Governor's view saying the Dravidian origin encompasses the geographical territory of the five states in the south of the country, and that the DMK was indulging in political rhetoric to serve its purpose. Speaking at the inaugural of a two-day programme on 'Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat - Connecting India' series held at the Raj Bhavan here on Monday, the Governor said India was a name given to the country. "In order to understand this nation, one has to understand Bharat, whose several thousands of years of civilisation gives us pride," he said. "Unfortunately, during British rule, we got divided. Later, we started getting fragmented on political
