An electric bus of the Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) gutted in a fire in the Hauz Khas area here on Sunday morning, officials of the Delhi Fire Services said. No casualties were reported in the incident, the DTC officials said. "The driver and the bus conductor acted immediately and asked all the passengers to get down, which averted a major incident," an official of the DFS said. Officials said that they received information around 11.10 am. Three fire tenders were pressed into service near the Padmini Enclave area. It took about an hour for the firefighters to douse the flames, officials said. However, the reason behind the fire is yet to be ascertained. Bus number 502 was on route from Old Delhi towards Mehrauli.
The average daily count of passengers travelling in DTC buses declined from 33.31 lakh in 2019-20 to 25.02 lakh in 2022-23, while the corresponding figure for cluster buses fell from 17.71 lakh to 16.39 lakh, according to the Delhi Economic Survey 2023-24. It rose to 30.15 lakh in the next financial year and then to 33.31 lakh in the 2019-20 fiscal. The Delhi government has sanctioned around Rs 280 crore for payment of pensions to more than 20,000 retired employees of the Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) pending from September to January. The retired DTC employees had approached the government multiple times for the release of their pensions. "About Rs 280 crore has been sanctioned for payment of pending pension of more than 20,000 retired pensioner employees of DTC from September to January. The pending pension will be transferred to the pensioners' accounts within the next two to three days," Delhi Transport Minister Kailash Gahlot said in a post on 'X' in Hindi. The Delhi government's finance department released grants of Rs 650 crore to the DTC last week, officials said.
The Delhi government is planning to offer free travel to people belonging to the third gender in DTC and cluster buses, officials said on Monday. Women are already provided free travel on these buses in the national capital. The free travel scheme for women began in October 2019. The Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) has partnered with a travel app for ensuring that commuters in the national capital do not have to visit multiple sites to book bus tickets and cabs by bringing different modes of transport on one platform. The trial for the government's "single-journey ticket" project has commenced and will last for seven days, officials said. "We have started a trial run for the project. DTC has partnered with Tummoc, a travel app, for this. We are introducing digital DTC passes and all-in-ticket. The trial run will go for seven days so that the users can give their feedback. We will also get to know about the technical glitches if there are any and will improve them before we launch it formally," a transport department official said. The Delhi government's ambitious 'mohalla' bus scheme is expected to be rolled out within the next few months with the DTC likely to sign a contract for procuring electric buses within this week, an official said on Wednesday. The mohalla bus service, announced in the 2023-24 Delhi budget, aims to deploy shorter nine-metre electric buses to boost last-mile connectivity in areas with roads that have less width or are crowded. "We are likely to sign a contract with the e-bus manufacturers this week or early next week for procurement of buses. The delivery of buses will take anywhere between three to five months," the official said. A majority of schemes under the Women and Child Development Department are on track, according to the Delhi government's Outcome Budget for 2022-23 presented in the Assembly on Monday. Out of 63 indicators for assessment, 71 per cent were on track, it said, adding that last year, out of 69 indicators for assessment, 80 per cent were on track. Tata Motors on Friday said its arm -- TML CV Mobility Solutions Ltd -- has signed an agreement with Delhi Transport Corporation for the operation of 1,500 electric buses in the National Capital. Under the pact, TML CV Mobility Solutions Ltd will supply, operate and maintain 1,500 units of 12-metre low-floor air-conditioned electric buses for a period of 12 years, the company said in a statement.
