Taiwan earthquake: Rescuers search for dozens of people out of contact

Rescuers searched for dozens of people out of contact Thursday a day after Taiwan's strongest earthquake in a quarter century damaged buildings, caused multiple rockslides and killed nine people. In the eastern coastal city of Hualien near the epicenter, workers used an excavator to put construction materials around the base of a damaged building to stabilize it and prevent a collapse. Mayor Hsu Chen-wei previously said 48 residential buildings were damaged. Some of the damaged buildings tilted at precarious angles with their ground floors crushed. More than 1,000 people were injured in the quake that struck Wednesday morning. Of the nine dead, at least four were struck inside Taroko National Park, a tourist attraction famous for its scenes of canyons and cliffs in Hualien County, about 150 kilometers (90 miles) from the island's capital Taipei. Nearly 150 people were either still trapped or out of contact Thursday, the National Fire Agency said. About two dozen tourists and some .

Thousands forced out of their homes after 7.1 quake hits western China

As aftershocks continued to rock western China on Wednesday, more than 12,000 people were staying in tents and other shelters, lighting bonfires to fend off the freezing weather. The previous day, a magnitude 7.1 earthquake in a remote part of China's Xinjiang region killed three people and left five injured, while damaging hundreds of buildings. The quake caused significant damage amid freezing temperatures, but the toll on lives and property was relatively light, owing to the sparse population around the epicenter in Uchturpan county, near the border with Kazakhstan. Footage shown by state broadcaster CCTV on Wednesday showed evacuees eating instant noodles in tents with bonfires providing heat. Jian Gewa, a 16-year old student in Uchturpan, said he was in the bathroom when the quake began. The entire building shook violently. I just thought I had to get myself to safety as quickly as possible, Jian said. He was evacuated to a school where he was staying in a dorm room with his

7.1-magnitude earthquake rattles part of western China, leaving 6 injured

A magnitude 7.1 earthquake struck a remote part of China's western Xinjiang region early Tuesday, state-run Xinhua News Agency reported. Xinhua cited the China Earthquake Networks Centre as saying the quake rocked Wushu county in Aksu prefecture shortly after 2 am local time. The US Geological Survey said the quake occurred in the Tian Shan mountain range, a seismically active region, though earthquakes of this size occur somewhat infrequently. It said the largest quake in the area in the past century was a 7.1-magnitude one in 1978 about 200 kilometres to the north of one early Tuesday. State broadcaster CCTV said there were several aftershocks since the main quake, registering up to 4.5 magnitude. Tremors were felt as far away as the neighboring countries Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan. In the Kazakh capital of Almaty, people left their homes, the Russian news agency Tass reported.

Over 200 dead since Japan's New Year's quakes, seven died in shelters

As of Wednesday, 203 deaths were reported following the 7.6 magnitude quake that slammed the western coastline of Japan on New Year's. Seven of them were at evacuation centers, where rescued people died from injuries and sickness. Such deaths weren't directly caused by the quakes, fires and mudslides. They happened in alleged safety. The pressures and stress of living in a place you aren't used to lead to such deaths, said Shigeru Nishimori, a disaster official at Ishikawa Prefecture, the hardest hit region. Nearly 30,000 people whose homes were destroyed or deemed unsafe were staying at schools and other makeshift facilities. Even minor rain and snow can set off landslides where the ground is loose from the more than 1,000 aftershocks that rattled the region for more than a week. Half-collapsed homes might flatten. Deaths from the New Year's temblor centered on Noto Peninsula in Ishikawa Prefecture have climbed daily, as rescue teams drew bodies from the rubble. Of the deaths, 91

Toll reaches 100 as survivors found in homes smashed by Japan earthquakes

The death toll from a major earthquake in western Japan reached 100 Saturday, as rescue workers fought aftershocks to carefully pull people from the rubble. Deaths had reached 98 earlier in the day, but two more deaths were reported in Anamizu, while officials in Ishikawa prefecture, the hardest-hit region, held their daily meeting to discuss strategy and damages. Some survivors who had clung to life for days were freed from collapsed homes. A man was pulled out 72 hours after a series of powerful quakes started rattling Japan's western coast. The number of missing was lowered to 211 as of Saturday, after it shot up two days ago. An older man was found alive Wednesday in a collapsed home in Suzu, one of the hardest-hit cities in Ishikawa Prefecture. His daughter called out, Dad, dad, as a flock of firefighters got him out on a stretcher, praising him for holding on for so long after Monday's 7.6 magnitude earthquake. Others were forced to wait while rescuers searched for loved ...

Earthquake in China kills at least 134 people; deadliest in 9 years

A strong overnight earthquake rattled a mountainous region of northwestern China, authorities said on Tuesday, reducing homes to rubble, leaving residents outside in a below-freezing winter night and killing 131 people in the nation's deadliest quake in nine years. The magnitude 6.2 earthquake struck just before midnight on Monday, injuring more than 700 people, damaging roads and knocking out power and communication lines in Gansu and Qinghai provinces, officials and Chinese media reports said. As emergency workers searched for the missing in collapsed buildings and at least one landslide, people who lost their homes spent a cold winter night in tents at hastily erected evacuation sites. I just feel anxious, what other feelings could there be? said Ma Dongdong, who noted in a phone interview that three bedrooms in his house had been destroyed and a part of his milk tea shop was cracked wide open. Afraid to return home because of aftershocks, he spent the first night in a field wit

Cold weather claims 6 lives in Nepal's earthquake-hit Karnali province

Six people died due to harsh cold weather in Nepal's earthquake-hit Karnali province, police said on Wednesday. According to local authorities, several families continue to live under makeshift tents as their residences were completely damaged by the earthquake on November 3. Among the most vulnerable to the harsh conditions are children, new mothers, patients with chronic illnesses, and the elderly population. The six deaths took place in the West Rukum district of the province on Tuesday, according to the police. While five people in the Aathbiskot Municipality, one died in the Sanobheri Rural Municipality. Most of those killed were elderly people between the ages of 60 to 80. All six individuals had taken refuge under makeshift tents as their homes were rendered uninhabitable by the destructive earthquake that hit the district earlier this month. The Jajarkot and the West Rukum districts were hit by a 6.4 magnitude earthquake on November 3, in which at least 154 people were ki

World Food Programme appeals for $19 mn for food in quake-hit Afghanistan

The United Nations' World Food Programme on Wednesday appealed for USD 19 million to provide emergency assistance to tens of thousands of people affected by a series of devastating earthquakes and aftershocks that has rocked western Afghanistan. Ana Maria Salhuana, deputy country director of the World Food Programme in Afghanistan, said it was helping survivors but it urgently needed more funding because "we are having to take this food from an already severely underfunded programme". The group said it is working to provide emergency food assistance to 100,000 people in the region. Disasters like these earthquakes pound communities who are already barely able to feed themselves back into utter destitution," the WFP said. A 6.3 magnitude earthquake struck part of western Afghanistan on Sunday, after thousands of people died and entire villages were flattened by major quakes a week earlier. It was the fourth quake the US Geological Survey has measured at 6.3 magnitude in the same are
