Rajapaksa heir running for prez even after Lankans' ousted powerful clan

When an uprising ousted Sri Lanka's president, many saw it as the end of his powerful family's hold on the island nation after more than 12 years of rule. Now, as Sri Lanka prepares to elect a new leader, Namal Rajapaksa is running for president. The 38-year-old is the son of former President Mahinda Rajapaksa and the nephew of the ousted President Gotabaya Rajapaksa. Namal Rajapaksa is presenting himself as an agent of change, but many see his bid for presidency as an attempt by the controversial political dynasty to regain power. By mid-2022, the clan's political career seemed in ruins. Some of its members were forced into hiding in military camps after angry protesters stormed their residences. Others simply gave up their seats in the government as people blamed them for hurtling the country of more than 20 million people into an economic crisis. Two years later, the family shunned and pushed to political wilderness is trying make a comeback via the Rajapaksa heir apparent who

Have proof candidate defeated Maduro in disputed election: Venezuela oppn

As thousands of people demonstrated across Venezuela, opposition candidate Edmundo Gonzalez on Monday announced that his campaign has the proof it needs to show he won the country's disputed election whose victory electoral authorities handed to President Nicolas Maduro. Gonzalez and opposition leader Maria Corina Machado told reporters they have obtained more than 70 per cent of tally sheets from Sunday's election, and they show Gonzalez with more than double Maduro's votes. Both called on people, some of whom protested in the hours after Maduro was declared winner, to remain calm and invited them to gather peacefully at 11 am Tuesday to celebrate the results. I speak to you with the calmness of the truth, Gonzalez said as dozens of supporters cheered outside campaign headquarters in the capital, Caracas. We have in our hands the tally sheets that demonstrate our categorical and mathematically irreversible victory. Their announcement came after the National Electoral Council, whic

Voters relieved as Biden drops from reelection, support Harris as successor

After weeks of uncertainty about who would be at the top of the Democratic Party's ticket in November, many voters expressed relief over the news that President Joe Biden would drop his reelection bid and began to think about who might replace him in a dramatically altered election landscape. Jerod Keene, a 40-year-old athletic trainer from swing-state Arizona, had planned to vote for Biden in November but was thankful for the president's decision, calling it inevitable. Keene said he's excited about the next candidate, hoping it will be Vice President Kamala Harris, whom Biden endorsed on Sunday. Kamala Harris is the easiest pick based on the fact that she's vice president and it would be tough for the party to try to go a different direction on that, said Keene, who lives in Tucson. And I think she seems ready. The Democratic Party has been deeply divided since Biden's poor debate performance on June 27, which left many questioning his ability to defeat Republican Donald Trump in

Post-communist generation hopes for new era of democracy in Mongolia

Tsenguun Saruulsaikhan, a young and newly minted member of Mongolia's parliament, is unhappy with below-cost electricity rates that she says show her country has yet to fully shake off its socialist past. Most of Mongolia's power plants date from the Soviet era and outages are common in some areas. Heavy smog envelops the capital Ulaanbaatar in the winter because many people still burn coal to heat their homes. It's stuck in how it was like 40, 50 years ago, said Tsenguun, part of a rising generation of leaders who are puzzling out their country's future after three decades of democracy. And that's the reason why we need to change it. Democracy in Mongolia is in a transition phase, said Tsenguun, who at 27 is the youngest member of a new parliament sworn in this week. We are trying to figure out what democracy actually means, she said in a recent interview. Discontented voters deliver a ruling party setback Mongolia became a democracy in the early 1990s after six decades of one-pa

MNS candidate Abhijeet Panse withdraws ahead of Maharashtra council polls

Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) candidate Abhijeet Panse has withdrawn from the fray for the upcoming state legislative council election from the Konkan Graduates' constituency, a party leader said on Friday. The party had last month announced filmmaker Panse's candidature for the legislative council elections slated to be held on June 26. "Panse will not be in the fray from the Konkan Graduates' constituency," said party spokesperson Sandeep Deshpande. The development comes after Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis met MNS chief Raj Thackeray last week. BJP MLC Niranjan Davkhare currently represents the constituency, and the party has renominated him. The biennial elections to four legislative council seats Mumbai Graduates, Konkan Graduates, Mumbai Teachers and Nashik Teachers became necessary as the terms of sitting members are expiring in July. The last date for filing the nominations is June 7. Voting will be held on June 26, and results will be declared o

Election results: Akhilesh hails UP voters for victory of INDIA bloc, PDA

SP chief Akhilesh Yadav on Wednesday said the success of the INDIA bloc in Uttar Pradesh is the victory of the backward classes, Dalits and minorities, and attributed it to the PDA strategy and efforts put in by the alliance. The former Uttar Pradesh chief minister, who fought the elections on the plank of PDA (Pichada, Dalit and Alpasankhyak) unity, said voters have proved that no force and deceit is more powerful than people's power. "Dear intelligent voters of Uttar Pradesh, the victory of India bloc in the state is also the victory of the Dalit-Bahujan trust which, along with backward, minority, tribal, 'half population' (women) and all neglected, exploited, oppressed, backwards among the upper castes, has fought shoulder to shoulder to save the Constitution that gives the right to equality, respect, self-respect, dignified life and reservation," he said on X. The INDIA bloc has won 43 out of 80 seats in Uttar Pradesh, with the SP securing 37 seats and Congress six. "This is th
