Maharashtra elections: Coastal belt's 75 seats crucial for power shift

The serene coastal belt of Maharashtra, including Mumbai, offers an interesting backdrop for a showdown between Mahayuti and MVA alliances in the next month's assembly elections, especially between two rival Shiv Senas. The most urbanised and industrial region, including the Mumbai metropolitan area, sends 75 MLAs to the assembly and 12 members to Lok Sabha. The coastal Konkan division in Maharashtra, spread from Sindhudurg to Mumbai, also covers Palghar, Thane, Raigad and Ratnagiri districts. Voting will be held on all 288 assembly constituencies in Maharashtra on November 20 and results will be declared on November 23. In the recent Lok Sabha polls, the Mahayuti alliance of Shiv Sena, BJP, and NCP, bagged seven seats. The BJP triumphed in Palghar, Ratnagiri-Sindhudurg, and Mumbai North, while the NCP, led by Ajit Pawar, had a face-saver in Raigad where its leader Sunil Tatkare retained his seat. In the upcoming polls, former Union Minister Narayan Rane, who won the ...

DUSU election: Results to declare after mess is cleared, says Delhi HC

The Delhi High Court on Wednesday asked the Delhi University Students' Union (DUSU) candidates to clean all campus structures defaced during the polls if they wanted vote count take place. The high court, which had on September 26 halted the counting of votes and declaration of results of DUSU and colleges elections, said its purpose was only to send a message that such violations would not be tolerated and not to thwart the election process. "Why don't you clean up the mess. The day the place is cleaned up, we will allow the counting of votes the very next day," a bench of Chief Justice Manmohan and Justice Tushar Rao Gedela said. The court was hearing an application filed by two candidates who contested the college elections in two separate DU colleges, seeking declaration of results. The candidates submitted that they would ensure the premises of their colleges are cleaned by the students and re-painted in coordination with the varsity. The application was filed in a pending ..

Haryana results: Cong looking for excuse for its defeat in state, says BJP

The BJP on Tuesday made light of the Congress raising the issue of "unexplained slowdown" of the Haryana poll results on the Election Commission website as the opposition party's attempt to build excuses for its impending defeat in the state elections. BJP spokesperson Sudhanshu Trivedi asserted that the trends in the counting of votes have made it clear that the ruling party is heading for a "glorious, decisive and historic" mandate in Haryana and will notch up its best ever show in Jammu and Kashmir. Asked about the Congress writing to the EC over the "unexplained slowdown" which allows "bad faith actors to spin narratives" that undermine the process, he mocked the opposition party for raising such an issue. It is a factually incorrect position to take, he said, adding that counting agents of the Congress are also there at booths to witness the proceedings. "The Congress is merely making an excuse in the view of its impending defeat," the Rajya Sabha MP said. Noting that the ...

Haryana CM slams Cong over 'kharchi-parchi', assures jobs on meritocracy

Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini on Monday attacked the Congress, saying some of its leaders are talking about the "kharchi-parchi" (corruption-favouritism) system in government jobs which was "prevalent" during its regime. He, however, asserted that his government's first and last priority is to provide jobs on merit basis. In a message for the state's youth which he posted on X, Saini wrote that for the past few days, "Congress candidates and Bhupinder Singh Hooda supporters are trading your future in the name of parchi-kharchi". "I feel sad and angry at their mentality," said Saini who was apparently referring to two purported audio clips of Congress' Neeraj Sharma and Shamsher Singh Gogi, legislators from Faridabad NIT and Assandh segments in the outgoing assembly. BJP MP Anurag Thakur, a few days ago, had played these two clips in a poll rally. In one clip, the Faridabad NIT MLA was heard saying that former chief minister Bhupinder Hooda (if Congress comes to power) w

Kirodi Meena takes onus of BJP's Lok Sabha loss; quits Rajasthan govt

Kirodi Lal Meena has resigned as a minister in the Rajasthan government following the BJP's underwhelming performance in the Lok Sabha polls in the state. During the recently held elections, Meena (72) had said he would quit the Bhajan Lal Sharma government if the BJP loses any of the seven parliamentary seats under his responsibility. The Rajasthan agriculture, rural development, disaster management and relief minister had said Prime Minister Narendra Modi assigned him the seven seats in eastern Rajasthan on which he worked hard during the polls. But in the Lok Sabha poll results announced on June 4, the BJP lost some of these seats, including his native Dausa. Overall the BJP won 14 of the state's 25 seats, its tally coming down from 24 in the 2019 polls. "Kirodi Meena resigned as minister. He gave the resignation to the chief minister 10 days back," an aide of the minister said. On Thursday, Meena posted the famous Ramcharitramanas lines 'Raghukul reeti sada chali aai, pran jaa

Open to probe, regulations will help doing business: Axis My India chief

Facing opposition fire for exit polls allegedly being used for stock market manipulation, Axis My India's chief Pradeep Gupta has said he is open to facing all kinds of investigations and it would help do business in a much better way if the government frames specific regulations for pollsters. Opposition parties and several civil society groups have been asking for thorough investigations, including by capital markets regulator SEBI and a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC), after the stock markets witnessed a massive rally when exit polls gave a huge majority to the BJP but fell sharply after the actual results showed the ruling party falling short of a clear majority on its own. In an interaction with PTI editors at the agency's headquarters here, Gupta said he has been demanding formulation of norms and regulations for pollsters since five years. Gupta, the chairman and managing director of Axis My India that had predicted 361-401 seats for the BJP-led alliance as against the ..

After LS poll loss, Kashmiri Shia leader Imran Ansari blasts his supporters

A video of a Shia leader in Kashmir angry with his supporters after his party's debacle in the recently concluded Lok Sabha polls has gone viral on social media. The 19-second video of Shia leader Imran Reza Ansari, the general secretary of the People's Conference, has gone viral on social media and received harsh comments. The People's Conference is headed by separatist-turned-mainstream politician Sajad Gani Lone. Lone contested the polls from north Kashmir's Baramulla Lok Sabha seat, but his party was routed in the elections. Independent candidate Sheikh Abdul Rashid alias Engineer Rashid, who is in jail on terror funding charges, won the seat. National Conference vice-president Omar Abdullah stood at the second place and Lone came a distant third. Apparently miffed over the poll debacle, Ansari is seen talking angrily to his supporters in the video. "I swear upon the grave of my father, I want to tear apart my clothes today. I was in an exalted position, you made me bite the
