E-buses expected to account for 11-13% of new bus sales by FY25: Icra

Electric buses are expected to account for up to 13 per cent of new bus sales by FY2025, rating agency ICRA said on Monday. Many state Electric Vehicle (EV) policies have announced specific targets and timelines for e-bus adoption, thereby creating a road map for electrification, it noted. With significant operational savings vis--vis conventional diesel buses, ICRA said it expects the demand for e-buses to continue to rise. "ICRA foresees electric buses (e-buses) to be at the forefront of India's electrification drive, with the segment expected to witness healthy traction going forward. ICRA estimates e-buses to account for 1113 per cent of new bus sales by FY2025," it said in a report. According to the report, it expects government subsidies and evolving technologies to play a role in further reducing the capital costs involved in e-buses. The traction in the e-bus segment is already visible over the past couple of years, with e-bus volumes as well as penetration levels improvin

US Ambassador to India Eric Garcetti on Wednesday said electric buses can change the world and give a future where the planet will be liveable. The ambassador travelled in an Indian electric bus to attend a session on "accelerating deployment of electric buses in India". "It was very exciting for me to be on an Indian electric bus. We know that electric buses can change the world. They are quieter, cleaner, they help us reduce our carbon (footprint) and give us a future where our planet will be livable. "It is one of the reasons the United States government is working with our friends in the Government of India to get more electric buses on the streets of Indian cities. So, we have launched an initiative to have 10,000 electric buses be on Indian streets," he said. The United States and India launched a mechanism that will facilitate deployment of 10,000 made-in-India electric buses in cities across the country, bringing into reality a joint vision first announced during Prime ...

Govt to bring payment security mechanism for large-scale e-bus rollout

The government will come out with a "payment security mechanism" to support large-scale rollout of electric buses as it eyes a major transition towards green public transport across the country, Tarun Kapoor, advisor to the Prime Minister at the PMO, said on Thursday. He also emphasised on the need to bring down the cost of electric vehicles to accelerate their adoption. While the government will continue to provide subsidies like those being offered under the FAME-II scheme because the price difference is huge and it has to be bridged, "we have to look at ways and means to bring down the price also, because government subsidy cannot be forever", he said, while addressing an Assocham conference on electric mobility here. Kapoor highlighted the need to be "a little more serious" in battery manufacturing "because we can't depend on imports". He said while China has taken the lead on lithium-ion batteries, India can catch up very fast and the government is looking at the entire ...

The directions were issued during a meeting Gahlot held with department officials to review various infrastructure projects, they added. "A major part of the meeting was spent on reviewing the progress of the construction of various bus depots. However, there was a brief discussion on the technical issues arising with electric buses," a source said. The minister instructed the officials to form a committee to analyse the technical snags in the electric buses. "They were also directed not to induct any new electric buses in the fleet till it is fully ensured that these will not develop any technical snags. For instance, 12 buses developed a low-battery (problem) while on the road on Tuesday. Such issues have been arising," the source added. Earlier this month, .

US govt awarding $1.7 billion to buy electric, low-emission buses

The US Department of Transportation is awarding almost USD 1.7 billion in grants for buying zero- and low-emission buses, with the money going to transit projects in 46 states and territories. The grants will enable transit agencies and state and local governments to buy 1,700 U.S.-built buses, nearly half of which will have zero carbon emissions. Funding for the grants comes from the 2021 bipartisan infrastructure bill signed into law by President Joe Biden. The Democratic president has made it a priority to put more electric vehicles on the road especially for schools and public transit in an effort to contain the damage from climate change. Every day, millions of Americans climb aboard over 60,000 buses to get to work, to school, doctor's appointments, everywhere they need to be, Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg said in a call with reporters. These are unprecedented levels of investment when it comes to putting modern cleaner buses on the road. Monday's announcement cov
