'Reference to Emergency could have been avoided': Rahul to LS Speaker

Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi met Speaker Om Birla on Thursday and voiced his displeasure over the reference to Emergency made by the chair, saying it was "clearly political" and could have been avoided. It was a courtesy call during which Gandhi also raised the issue of Emergency being invoked by the Speaker in the House, AICC general secretary K C Venugopal told reporters after the meeting in Parliament House. "It was a courtesy call. The Speaker declared Rahul Gandhi as the Leader of Opposition and after that he along with other INDIA alliance partner leaders met the Speaker," he said. Asked whether Gandhi discussed the issue of Emergency being raised in the House, Venugopal said, "We discussed so many things about Parliament functioning. Of course, this issue also came up." "Rahul ji, as Leader of Opposition, informed the Speaker about this issue, and said it could have been avoided from the Speaker's reference. That is clearly a political reference, it cou

France to lift emergency to allow political dialogue in New Caledonia

French President Emmanuel Macron decided Monday to lift the state of emergency in the French Pacific territory of New Caledonia in a move meant to allow political dialogue following the unrest that left seven people dead and a trail of destruction, his office said. The president's office said in a statement the state of emergency won't be extended for the moment and will therefore end Monday at 8 pm in Paris, which is 5 am Tuesday in New Caledonia. The decision aims at enabling meetings of the various components of pro-independence movement FLNKS, the Kanak and Socialist National Liberation Front, and allow elected officials and other local leaders "in a position to call for lifting the barricades to go there and meet with protesters, the statement said. Macron repeatedly pushed for the removal of protesters' barricades with leaders on both sides of New Caledonia's bitter divide Indigenous Kanaks, who want independence, and the pro-Paris leaders, who do not. In the statement, he .

Tornadoes kill 4 in Oklahoma; governor issues state of emergency

Tornadoes that tore through Oklahoma have flattened buildings across one rural town, killing at least four people, causing widespread power outages and leaving a trail of destruction, Gov. Kevin Stitt said Sunday. Nearly 30,000 people remained without power after tornadoes began late Saturday night. The damage was extensive in Sulphur, a town of about 5,000 people, where some downtown buildings were reduced to rubble and roofs were sheared off houses across a 15-block radius. You just can't believe the destruction, Stitt said. It seems like every business downtown has been destroyed. Stitt said about 30 people were injured in Sulphur alone. Dozens of reported tornadoes have wreaked havoc in the nation's midsection since Friday, with flood watches and warnings in effect Sunday for Oklahoma and other states including Kansas, Missouri, Arkansas and Texas. In Oklahoma, a tornado ripped through Holdenville, a town of about 5,000 people, late Saturday, killing two people, and injuring f

LS polls: Cong has not shed its mindset of imposing Emergency, says PM Modi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday said the Congress' mindset of "shackling the Constitution" and imposing Emergency had not changed, and the opposition's INDIA grouping did not have any pro-development ideas. Speaking at a campaign rally here for BJP candidates from Wardha and Amravati Lok Sabha constituencies in eastern Maharashtra, he also said the Congress knows it cannot win the ongoing Lok Sabha elections, and therefore its "yuvraj" (apparently referring to Rahul Gandhi) was threatening that the country will be on fire if the BJP won. Against the BJP's development agenda, the Congress and INDIA bloc are bereft of any ideas, the prime minister said, adding that polling for the first phase of the elections, which began earlier in the morning, showed that his government was set to win a third term. "When its 'yuvraj' says the country will be set ablaze, (it indicates that) Congress' mindset of shackling the Constitution and imposing Emergency has not changed," Modi said, ...

Haiti extends emergency, nighttime curfew to prevent gang attacks

Haiti's government said Thursday that it was extending a state of emergency and nighttime curfew to try and curb violent gang attacks that have paralyzed the capital of Port-au-Prince in a fierce battle for political power. An initial three-day curfew was announced over the weekend, but gangs have continued to attack police stations and other state institutions at night as Haiti's National Police struggles to contain the violence with limited staff and resources. The people with the guns are essentially the current arbiter of Haitian politics, said Robert Fatton, a Haitian politics expert at the University of Virginia. The gangs have won the battle so far. The attacks began a week ago, shortly after embattled Prime Minister Ariel Henry agreed to hold general elections in mid-2025 while attending a meeting of Caribbean leaders in Guyana. He then flew to Kenya to push for the deployment of a U.N.-backed police force from the East African country to help fight gangs in Haiti. But a cou

UN emergency meeting at Guyana's request on Venezuela's territorial claims

The UN Security Council scheduled an emergency closed meeting Friday at the request of Guyana following Venezuela's weekend referendum claiming the vast oil- and mineral-rich Essequibo region that makes up a large part of its neighbor. In a letter to the council president, Guyana's foreign minister, Hugh Hilton Todd, accused Venezuela of violating the UN Charter by attempting to take its territory. The letter recounted the arbitration between then-British Guiana and Venezuela in 1899 and the formal demarcation of their border in a 1905 agreement. For over 60 years, he said, Venezuela accepted the boundary, but in 1962 it challenged the 1899 arbitration that set the border. The diplomatic fight over the Essequibo region has flared since then, but it intensified in 2015 after ExxonMobil announced it had found vast amounts of oil off its coast. The dispute escalated as Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro held a referendum Sunday in which Venezuelans approved his claim of sovereignty o

UN appeals for $19 mn to provide emergency food in quake-hit Afghanistan

The United Nations' World Food Program on Wednesday appealed for USD 19 million to provide emergency assistance to tens of thousands of people affected by a series of devastating earthquakes and aftershocks that has rocked western Afghanistan. Ana Maria Salhuana, deputy country director of the World Food Program in Afghanistan, said it was helping survivors but it urgently needed more funding because we are having to take this food from an already severely underfunded program. The group said it is working to provide emergency food assistance to 100,000 people in the region. Disasters like these earthquakes pound communities who are already barely able to feed themselves back into utter destitution," the WFP said. A 6.3 magnitude earthquake struck part of western Afghanistan on Sunday, after thousands of people died and entire villages were flattened by major quakes a week earlier. It was the fourth quake the US Geological Survey has measured at 6.3 magnitude in the same area in ju

Sirens blare across Russia as it holds nationwide emergency drills

Sirens wailed across Russia and TV stations interrupted regular programming to broadcast warnings Wednesday as part of sweeping drills intended to test the readiness of the country's emergency responders amid the fighting in Ukraine. The exercise that started on Tuesday follows Ukrainian drone attacks on Moscow and other cities. As the readiness drill went on, the Russian Defence Ministry said air defences shot down 31 Ukrainian drones over border regions early Wednesday. As part of the drills, TV stations broadcast a notice saying: Attention everyone! The readiness of the public warning system is being tested! Please remain calm! Russian media said the exercise's storyline mentions the increasing danger of a conflict between nuclear powers and simulates a response to a situation in which 70% of housing and all vital infrastructure have been destroyed, wide areas contaminated by radioactive fallout and a general mobilization announced. The stark scenario echoes Kremlin warnings tha

Maui's emergency services chief resigns after facing criticism for inaction

The head of the Maui Emergency Management Agency resigned abruptly Thursday, a day after saying he had no regret about not using sirens to warn residents of wildfires that devastated the historic seaside community of Lahaina and killed at least 111 people. That decision from the agency directed by Administrator Herman Andaya, coupled with water shortages that hampered firefighters and an escape route that became clogged with vehicles, has brought intense criticism from many residents. The lack of sirens has emerged as a potential misstep, and The Associated Press reported that it was part of a series of communication issues that added to the chaos. Mayor Richard Bissen accepted Andaya's resignation effective immediately, the County of Maui announced on Facebook. Andaya cited unspecified health reasons, with no further details provided. Given the gravity of the crisis we are facing, my team and I will be placing someone in this key position as quickly as possible, Bissen said in the

Endoscopy facility has been restored in the AB 2 ward on the second floor and at the 8th floor OT complex. Orthopaedic OT has been shifted temporarily to Casualty OT, Dr Dada said.
