Complex procedures, import restrictions hurt garment export growth: GTRI

Issues like complex procedures of DGFT and customs, import restrictions and domestic vested interests are holding up the export growth of the Indian garment sector, think tank GTRI said on Sunday. At the root of the exporters' problem is difficulty in obtaining quality raw fabric, particularly synthetic fabric, the Global Trade Research Initiative said. "Unlike in Bangladesh and Vietnam, where exporters easily access quality imported fabrics, Indian exporters struggle daily. High import duties on fabrics, coupled with DGFT (Directorate General of Foreign Trade) and Customs; intricate procedures, force exporters to meticulously account for every inch and type of fabric imported," GTRI founder Ajay Srivastava said. Fabric maker Raymond to add over 100 stores of ethnic wear brand in FY25

Leading textile and fabric manufacturer Raymond has plans to add over 100 stores of its ethnic wear brand 'Ethnix by Raymond', the latest annual report of the company said. Raymond, which has introduced Ethnix format couple of years ago as a brand for occasions and celebrations, now has over 114 stores. The company intends to fuel growth with 'Ethnix By Raymond' as it taps into the exponentially growing segment of ethnic wear in India, it said. "As the Indian weddings are getting glitzier and people are celebrating the various occasions, we have expanded are our store footprint by taking Ethnix by Raymond to the length and breadth of the country," Chairman and Managing Director Gautam Hari Singhania said while addressing shareholders. Air India has received feedback on the new cabin crew uniforms, including about fabric issues, and will soon start their production for all the cabin crew after taking into consideration the inputs, according to people in the know. In December, the Tata Group-owned airline unveiled the new uniforms, designed by Manish Malhotra, for its cabin and cockpit crew. Initially, the uniforms were introduced with much fanfare for crew members of the carrier's A350 aircraft. When contacted, an Air India spokesperson on Monday said production programme for the uniforms for all its cabin crew members will start in about a week's time. Two persons in the know said there are some issues with the fabric used for the new uniforms, including that colour was fading fast. Another person said the feedback on the uniforms will be taken into consideration before starting production for all crew members. 19 workers injured as gas furnace explodes at Pune fabrication unit

As many as 19 workers were injured after a gas furnace exploded in a powder coating and fabrication unit in Maharashtra's Pune, an official said on Wednesday. The incident took place at the manufacturing set-up in the Hinjawadi area of Pimpri-Chinchwad on Tuesday evening, he said. Police said the gas furnace at the unit exploded, dispersing metal parts kept inside it in all directions. A total of 19 workers suffered burns after the hot metal parts flung from the furnace fell on them, he said. A case has been registered against the proprietor and management of the unit for alleged negligence.

Raymond Q3 net profit at Rs 101.07 crore, income rises 48.25%

Raymond Ltd on Tuesday reported a multifold jump in its net profit to Rs 101.07 crore for the third quarter ended in December 2021. The company had posted a net profit of Rs 22.18 crore during the October-December of the previous fiscal, Raymond said in a regulatory filing. Its revenue from operations was up 48.25 per cent to Rs 1,843.39 crore during the quarter under review as against Rs 1,243.44 crore in the corresponding period of the previous fiscal. According to the company, it has reported "highest profitable quarter in last 10 years" and its revenue is now "100 per cent of pre-Covid levels". Commenting on the result, Raymond Chairman & Managing Director Gautam Hari Singhania said: "With our focused approach on capitalizing on the growing demand for our products and continued cost optimization, we delivered record profitability.
