Fertility rate in South decreasing, need population management: Naidu

Fertility rates in southern states have gone below the replacement rate, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu said on Saturday and stressed on the need for "population management". Speaking at the HT Leadership Summit here, the chief minister said there is a need to talk about population management and it's going to be an asset for India in the years to come. Naidu said he has been stressing that the silence on the subject should be broken and people should talk about population management. "People are asking what population management is. You are seeing all European countries, even Japan, even China. All countries are having an aging problem. Only India is having an advantage up to 2047," Naidu said. "Now South India's aging problem has started. Our fertility rate is 1.6. Generally, to maintain population, 2.1 fertility rate has to be maintained," he said, adding the population growth rate is at the borderline at present in the southern states and soon the population

CK Birla group firm Birla Fertility & IVF to invest Rs 500 cr in 2-3 yrs

The USD 3-billion CK Birla group company Birla Fertility & IVF is looking to invest Rs 500 crore in the next 2-3 years as it seeks to capture a larger share in the domestic market, a company statement said on Thursday. Birla Fertility & IVF, which is the third largest fertility chain, plans to extend its presence in the southern region by establishing 10-12 new centres across Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Telangana and Andhra Pradesh within the next 12-24 months, the company said. "The group is viewing for a bigger share of the IVF market and plans to invest Rs 500 crore in next 2-3 years," it said. Surrogacy rules: Couples with medical condition can now use donor gametes

The Centre has amended the surrogacy rules 2022 allowing married couples to use an egg or sperm of a donor in case one of the partners is suffering from a medical condition. The District Medical Board has to certify that either the husband or wife is suffering from a medical condition necessitating the use of donor gamete. "In case when the District Medical Board certifies that either husband or wife constituting the intending couple suffers from a medical condition necessitating use of donor gamete, then surrogacy using donor gamete is allowed," the notification issued on Wednesday said. The surrogacy using donor gamete is allowed subject to the condition that the child to be born through surrogacy must have at least one gamete from the intending couple, it stated. This means if both the partners have medical problems or are unable to have their own gametes they cannot opt for surrogacy. Birth rate in Singapore falls to record low, only 35,605 babies in 2022

Singapore's birth rate hit a record low in 2022 with only 35,605 babies born in that year when the country also registered the highest number of deaths annually since 1960, according to media reports on Tuesday. Official figures released by the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) showed a 7.9 per cent drop in the number of live births. The drop was from 38,672 in 2021 to 35,605 in 2022. There were 26,891 deaths in 2022, a 10.7 per cent increase compared with the 24,292 recorded in 2021 in the Report on Registration of Births and Deaths. This was the highest number of total yearly deaths since 1960, reported Chinese-language daily Lianhe Zaobao. The report also stated that women are progressively getting older before they start having children, with the median age of first-time mothers rising to 31.9 years in 2022 from 30.6 in 2018.
