Minor suspect in Halloween shootings charged as adult: Florida prosecutor

A 17-year-old suspect in a shooting that killed two people and wounded seven others during a Halloween celebration that drew 75,000 revellers to the streets of downtown Orlando, Florida, last week has been charged as an adult, a prosecutor said Monday. Jaylen Edgar was charged as an adult with two second-degree murder charges and a count of attempted murder, though the case will be presented before a grand jury, which could decide to up the charges to first-degree murder, said State Attorney Andrew Bain. This decision was not made lightly, and only after reviewing all the available evidence, Bain said at a news conference in Orlando. Edgar is accused of opening fire during a Halloween street celebration that drew tens of thousands of costumed revellers to downtown Orlando's bar and restaurant district early Friday. Besides the two men who were killed, an additional seven people were wounded and a woman was trampled as people fled in terror, according to the Orlando Police ...

A shooting Wednesday afternoon at a South Florida Walmart killed one person and wounded another, authorities said, adding that several other people were injured in the commotion that followed. The shooting occurred following a quarrel between two groups at the Walmart in Florida City, about 40 kilometers southwest of Miami, Miami-Dade police spokesperson Alvaro Zabaleta said. One person was arrested, and police were looking for five more suspects. Rescue workers transported two victims to a Miami trauma centre, and one later died. The man who died was involved in the confrontation, while the other victim was a bystander who was shot in the foot, police said. Several others were injured during the commotion caused by the shooting, officials said. A woman who fell and hit her head was taken to a hospital. Rescue workers treated five other people for minor cuts and scrapes outside the store.

9 hurt in gunfire near Hollywood, Florida; taken to children's hospital

Nine people were injured Monday evening when gunfire erupted along a beach boardwalk in Hollywood, Florida, sending people frantically running for cover along the crowded beach on Memorial Day. Several of the victims were taken to a children's hospital, police spokesperson Deanna Bettineschi said. However, authorities have not yet released the ages of the victims. The nine victims included six adults and three children, according to Yanet Obarrio Sanchez, a spokesperson for Memorial Healthcare System. All of the victims were in stable condition, she said. Ten people injured on Monday in drive-by shooting in Florida: Police

Ten people were injured Monday afternoon during a drive-by shooting in a central Florida neighborhood, police said. Lakeland Police Chief Sam Taylor said during a news conference that two of the victims were critically injured, while the wounds of the other eight victims weren't considered life-threatening. Lakeland is located about 30 miles (50 kilometers) east of Tampa. I've been here 34 years, and I can tell you I have never worked an event where this many people were shot at one time, ever, Taylor said. A crowd of people were gathered along a residential street when a dark-blue sedan rolled by, police said. Shooters fired from the windows before the car sped away. Officers were actively searching for the vehicle and the shooters Monday night, officials said. Taylor said investigators believe the shooting was a targeted attack. Police said marijuana was found at the scene of the shooting, and investigators believe drug sales were taking place. Taylor described the neighborhood

Florida school shooter who killed 17 was 'damaged person', says attorney

The lead attorney for Florida school shooter Nikolas Cruz told the jury in his penalty trial Monday they have witnessed things that will haunt them for the rest of their lives, but they now need to learn what led him to the massacre of 17 people four years ago before they can decide whether he is sentenced to death or life without parole. Melisa McNeill told the seven-man, five-woman jury and their 10 alternates in her opening statement that Cruz committed a horrible, unspeakable act when he murdered 14 students and three staff members at Parkland's Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School on Feb. 14, 2018, but he was a damaged person whose birth mother had abused alcohol and cocaine throughout her pregnancy. We must understand the person behind the crime, McNeill, an assistant public defender, said. Cruz. 23, pleaded guilty in October to 17 counts of first-degree murder and his trial is only to decide whether he is sentenced to death or life without parole. This is the deadliest U.S.
