Ford plans to cut 4,000 jobs in Europe, cites disruptive shift to EVs

Ford Motor Co. says it will reduce its workforce by 4,000 in Europe and the U.K. by the end of 2027, citing headwinds from the economy and pressure from increased competition and weaker than expected sales of electric cars. Ford said most of the job cuts would come in Germany and would be carried out in consultation with employee representatives. The company said that it would also reduce working time for workers at its Cologne, Germany plant where it makes the Capri and Explorer electric vehicles. Dave Johnston, Ford's European vice president for transformation and partnerships, said in a statement that it is critical to take difficult but decisive action to ensure Ford's future competitiveness in Europe. Ford agrees to pay up to $165 mn fine to US govt for slow recall response

Ford Motor Co will pay a penalty of up to $165 million to the US government for moving too slowly on a recall and failing to give accurate recall information. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says in a statement Thursday that the civil penalty is the second-largest in its 54-year history. Only the fine Takata paid for faulty air bag inflators was higher. The agency says Ford was too slow to recall vehicles with faulty rear-view cameras, and it failed to give the agency complete information, which is required by the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Act. Ford agreed to a consent order with the agency that includes a payment of $65 million, and $45 million in spending to comply with the law. Another $55 million will be deferred. Timely and accurate recalls are critical to keeping everyone safe on our roads, NHTSA Deputy Administrator Sophie Shulman said in the statement. US regulator ends investigation into Ford engine failures after recall

The US government's auto safety regulator has ended a 2 1/2-year investigation into Ford engine failures after the company replaced engines or extended the warranty on some vehicles. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says in documents posted Monday on its website that its analysis traced the problem to intake valves that can fracture inside some 2.7-liter and 3-liter turbocharged engines. Documents say the probe opened in May of 2022 ended up covering more than 411,000 vehicles from the 2021 and 2022 model years including the Ford F-150 Bronco, Edge and Explorer as well as the Lincoln Aviator and Nautilus. The agency was looking into catastrophic engine failures caused by intake valves fracturing, dropping into the cylinder and hitting the piston. The documents say a forensic analysis of fractured valves found that when the they were made by a parts supplier, the temperature got too high, making them brittle and likely to fracture during normal engine use. Preparing to utilise Chennai manufacturing plant for exports: Ford

American automaker Ford on Friday said it is preparing to utilise its Chennai manufacturing plant to roll out vehicles for exports and has intimated the same to the Tamil Nadu government. The company which in 2021 had said that it would stop manufacturing vehicles in India, has submitted a Letter of Intent (LOI) to the Tamil Nadu government, confirming its intention to utilise the Chennai plant for manufacturing for exports. The announcement follows a meeting between Ford leadership and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin as part of his visit to the United States, Ford said in a statement. "This step aims to underscore our ongoing commitment to India as we intend to leverage the manufacturing expertise available in Tamil Nadu to serve new global markets," Ford International Markets Group President Kay Hart said. Ford to shift EV strategy by building new lower-cost pickup, commercial van

Facing competition from automakers with lower costs, Ford Motor Co is shifting its electric vehicle strategy and now will focus on making two new electric pickup trucks and a new commercial van. The company says all will cost less, have longer range and be profitable within a year of reaching showrooms. Ford, which is losing millions on its current EVs, gave few details about the new products. But it said production of its next generation full-size electric pickup truck in Tennessee will be delayed 18 months, until 2027. The company also says it won't build fully electric three-row SUVs due to high battery costs, but instead will focus on making those vehicles as gas-electric hybrids. The other new pickup will be mid-sized, based on new underpinnings developed by a small team in California. It also will go on sale in 2027. Production of the unspecified van will start at an assembly plant west of Cleveland in 2026. The changes will force Ford to write down USD 400 million of its ...

US govt opens investigation into Ford recall for Bronco gasoline leaks

The US government's auto safety agency has opened an investigation into a Ford recall for gasoline leaks from cracked fuel injectors that can cause engine fires, saying in documents that the remedy doesn't fix the leaks. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said in documents posted on Friday that the probe will evaluate the adequacy and safety consequences of the remedy that Ford specifies in the recall. The agency moved with unusual speed, posting documents detailing the recall query just two days after the recall was made public. The recall covers nearly 43,000 Ford Bronco Sport SUVs from the 2022 and 2023 model years, and Escape SUVs from 2022. All have 1.5-litre engines. NHTSA said that fuel injectors can crack, causing gasoline or vapours to leak at a high rate onto hot surfaces in the engine compartment. The Associated Press reported on Wednesday that Ford's remedy for the leaks is to add a drain tube to send the gas away from hot surfaces, and a software updat

Ford to recall 1.9 mn Explorer SUVs to secure trim pieces that can fly off

Ford is recalling nearly 1.9 million Explorer SUVs in the US because a trim piece can fly off and create a hazard for other drivers. The recall covers Explorers from the 2011 through 2019 model years. Documents posted Wednesday by the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration say that clips holding the trim that covers the roof supports close to the windshield can come loose. If that happens, the trim piece can fly off and increase the risk of a crash. The recall comes after US regulators opened an investigation into the problem last January after receiving 164 consumer complaints. Canadian regulators also inquired about the problem. Documents say that at first Ford decided against a recall, citing the low mass of the part. But the company decided to do the recall after US regulators determined the problem was a safety hazard. Ford said in a statement Wednesday that it expects only 5% of the recalled Explorers to be affected by the problem. It encourages owners to contact

Tata Motors on Friday said it has commenced production at its new production facility at Sanand in Gujarat. Tata Passenger Electric Mobility Ltd, a unit of Tata Motors, had acquired the facility from Ford India for Rs 725.7 crore in January last year.
