Ford agrees to pay up to $165 mn fine to US govt for slow recall response

Ford Motor Co will pay a penalty of up to $165 million to the US government for moving too slowly on a recall and failing to give accurate recall information. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says in a statement Thursday that the civil penalty is the second-largest in its 54-year history. Only the fine Takata paid for faulty air bag inflators was higher. The agency says Ford was too slow to recall vehicles with faulty rear-view cameras, and it failed to give the agency complete information, which is required by the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Act. Ford agreed to a consent order with the agency that includes a payment of $65 million, and $45 million in spending to comply with the law. Another $55 million will be deferred. Timely and accurate recalls are critical to keeping everyone safe on our roads, NHTSA Deputy Administrator Sophie Shulman said in the statement. US regulator ends investigation into Ford engine failures after recall

The US government's auto safety regulator has ended a 2 1/2-year investigation into Ford engine failures after the company replaced engines or extended the warranty on some vehicles. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says in documents posted Monday on its website that its analysis traced the problem to intake valves that can fracture inside some 2.7-liter and 3-liter turbocharged engines. Documents say the probe opened in May of 2022 ended up covering more than 411,000 vehicles from the 2021 and 2022 model years including the Ford F-150 Bronco, Edge and Explorer as well as the Lincoln Aviator and Nautilus. The agency was looking into catastrophic engine failures caused by intake valves fracturing, dropping into the cylinder and hitting the piston. The documents say a forensic analysis of fractured valves found that when the they were made by a parts supplier, the temperature got too high, making them brittle and likely to fracture during normal engine use. Ford motors recalls over 456,000 cars due to loss of drive power risk

Ford is recalling more than 4,56,000 Bronco Sport and Maverick vehicles due to a battery detection issue that can result in loss of drive power, increasing crash risks. According to documents published by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the body and power train control modules for these cars may fail to detect changes in battery charge. And when undetected, a low battery charge can cause an unexpected loss of drive power including sudden stalling or inability to restart and the use of other electric capabilities like hazard lights. The recall covers about 403,000 model year 2021-2024 Bronco Sports produced between February 2020 and March 2024, as well as more than 53,000 model year 2022-2023 Mavericks manufactured from February 2021 to October 2022, a recall report dated Friday notes. To remedy this issue, dealers will recalibrate the impacted vehicles' body and power train control modules at no cost. Owner notification letters are set to be mailed out on May 1

Ford recalls more than 55,000 F-150 vehicles due to wiper motor issue

Ford is recalling more than 550,00 F-150 vehicles in the US and Canada because the front windshield wiper motor may stop functioning, causing the wipers to stop working. The automobile maker said that the inoperative windshield wipers on the 2021-2022 models can reduce visibility in certain conditions, which could increase the risk of a crash. Ford Motor Co. is recalling 453,650 of the vehicles in the US and 103,076 in Canada. Recall notification letters are expected to be mailed in the US on January 3. Dealers will replace the front windshield wiper motor for free.

Park outdoors: Ford recalls 39,000 US SUVs after engine fire reports

Ford is asking the owners of 350,000 vehicles in to take them to dealers for repairs in three recalls, including about 39,000 that should be parked outdoors because the engines can catch fire. Ford says in US government documents posted on Thursday that it doesn't know what's causing fires in some 2021 Ford Expedition and Lincoln Navigator SUVs. But the company says fires can happen even while the engines are off. Ford has reports of 16 fires under the hood, 14 in rental company vehicles. One person was burned. It's recommending that the SUVs be parked outdoors and away from buildings. So far it hasn't developed a repair for the fires, which appear to start at the back of the engine compartment on the passenger side. Of the 16 fires, 12 happened while the SUV engines were turned off, Ford said in a prepared statement. The company says it has no reports of fires extending to any buildings. Ford says it's not instructing owners to stop driving the SUVs, although those who might not b
