India is planning to move from the Wholesale Price Index to Producer Price Index (PPI) in future as most of the G20 countries follow this practice, an official said. The official said that the National Statistical Commission (NSC) is examining the working group report on the roadmap for introducing the PPI and their recommendations are awaited. "It is with Statistical Commission, so we will wait for the panel recommendation," the official, who did not wish to be named, said. When asked about the future plan on this, the government official said: "Initially, we will probably go with both (WPI and PPI) and after a few years, we may phase out WPI, because we are one of the few countries among G20 which still have WPI. All other including China use PPI". The PPI has been discussed for the past several year. A working group was set up a few years back to determine the methodology and data requirements to move ahead. In 2019, the government constituted a working group for revision of th

Top UN leaders and envoys have lauded India's "exemplary leadership" in addressing global challenges and for being a champion of South-South cooperation, as they highlighted the country's G20 Presidency and termed the enduring" partnership between India and the United Nations as a guidelight within the Global South. India assumed the year-long G20 Presidency in December last year and is all set to hand over the baton to Brazil. The Permanent Mission of India to the UN and the UN Office for South-South Cooperation (UNOSSC) organised a special event at the world body's headquarters here Wednesday to commemorate six years of collaborative partnership of the India-UN Development Partnership Fund. India has long been a champion of South-South cooperation and the global pursuit of the SDGs, bringing to life its philosophy of 'Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam' - the world as one interconnected family, UN Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed said in her remarks at the event. Mohammed underscored t
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has asserted that India achieved the extraordinary during its G20 presidency as it revitalised multilateralism, amplified the voice of the Global South, championed development, and fought for the empowerment of women everywhere. With Brazil set to take over the presidency from December 1, Modi highlighted the elite group's journey under India and expressed confidence that his country hands over the charge with the conviction that our collective steps for people, planet, peace, and prosperity, will resonate for years to come. In an opinion piece which appeared in several newspapers on Thursday, Modi said India's approach was defined by being "inclusive, ambitious, action-oriented, and decisive" and the New Delhi Leaders' Declaration (NDLD), unanimously adopted by all G20 members, is testimony to our commitment to deliver on these principles. Noting that it has been 365 days since India took the Chair, he said the global landscape grappled with multifacete
The country needs to work in partnership with Global South to accelerate its growth rate to achieve the dream of Vikshit Bharat (developed India) by 2047, G20 Sherpa Amitabh Kant said on Monday. The next two decades are said to be the most significant of India's growth story, he said while speaking at the First Regional Conference on Access to Legal Aid. According to a Niti Aayog roadmap, India would be Vikshit Bharat with a USD 30 trillion economy by 2047 and per capita income of about USD 18,000, he noted. "If this level of sustained growth that we aim to achieve and opportunities must now catalyse this, we need to work in partnership with Global South," Kant said. The Global South is critical and important because this year, 80 per cent of the world's growth will come from emerging markets and the Global South, he said. According to the IMF, he said, almost two-thirds of global growth would come from emerging markets in the next two decades. "This year itself, six of the faste
India's strategic position enables it to engage with various power blocs constructively and its ability to navigate complex diplomatic waters showcases the country as a potential mediator in international conflicts, the country's envoy to the UN has said. "In an era marked by rapid changes and complex challenges, India emerges not just as a nation of immense diversity and cultural richness, but also as a key player on the international stage, embodying the principles of cooperation, peace and mutual respect, India's Permanent Representative to the UN Ambassador Ruchira Kamboj said here. Kamboj delivered a special address on the topic India in the Emerging Global Order' at the India: The Next Decade' conference hosted by the Deepak and Neera Raj Center at Columbia University's School of International and Public Affairs last week. Kamboj said India's ancient philosophy of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam' the world is one family - positions the country uniquely as a mediator and conciliator in
Noting that the road to global economic recovery is still difficult, Chinese Premier Li Qiang has called on the G20 member nations to take more practical steps to implement the consensus reached at this year's New Delhi summit of the forum to ensure development and prosperity. Li, who deputised for Chinese President Xi Jinping at the virtual meeting presided over by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday, also urged the member countries to accord high priority to development cooperation and oppose the politicisation of development issues. While many leaders who attended Wednesday's virtual summit spoke on the Israel-Hamas conflict calling for extending timely humanitarian assistance, not allowing the violence to spread, and finding a long-term solution to the Palestine issue, Li reportedly focussed on development cooperation among the member countries of the G20. Excerpts of Li's speech reported by the state-run Xinhua news agency late Wednesday night did not refer to the ...

Countries currently remain focused not only on containing any spillover of the conflict but also on ensuring that it doesn't escalate further
Acknowledging that what is happening in Ukraine is undoubtedly a "tragedy", Russian President Vladimir Putin on Wednesday said conflicts elsewhere, including in the Gaza Strip, are also "shocking" and urged the G20 nations to make efforts to end conflicts. Putin made these remarks while virtually addressing the G20 meeting hosted by India. Putin had skipped the in-person G20 summit in New Delhi in September, saying he had to focus on the "special military operation" in Ukraine. Russia's state-run Tass news agency reported that Putin's remarks came in the wake of the statements by some leaders who said they were shaken by the ongoing aggression in Ukraine. I understand that this war can't help but be shocking. But the bloody coup in Ukraine in 2014, which was followed by the Kiev regime's war against its own people in Donbass was that not shocking? And the extermination of civilians in Palestine, in the Gaza Strip now isn't that shocking? Putin said. Russia invaded Ukraine in ...
Expressing concern over the prevailing insecurity and instability in West Asia, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday told G20 leaders that it is important to ensure that the Israel-Hamas war does not take the shape of a regional conflict and welcomed the announcement of the release of hostages. In his opening remarks at the virtual G20 Leaders' Summit, Modi said terrorism is "unacceptable" to everyone and asserted that the death of civilians wherever it may be is condemnable. In the last few months, new challenges have emerged and the situation of insecurity and instability in West Asia is a matter of concern, he said at the virtual meeting attended by leaders like European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Russian President Vladimir Putin, Brazilian President Luiz Incio Lula da Silva, Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva, among others. "Our coming together shows that we are ...
India had suspended visa services in September this year following the allegations against India being involved in the killing of Khalistan separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar
Against the backdrop of the Israel-Hamas conflict, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will chair a virtual summit of G20 leaders on Wednesday which would be attended by the likes of Russian President Vladimir Putin and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. With Ottawa confirming Trudeau's participation in the summit, this would be the first time he would come face to face with Prime Minister Modi, albeit virtually, after ties between India and Canada came under severe strain following Trudeau's allegations in September of a "potential" involvement of Indian agents in the killing of Khalistani separatist Hardeep Nijjar on June 18 in British Columbia. India had designated Nijjar as a terrorist in 2020. India has rejected Trudeau's allegations as "absurd" and "motivated". While Putin's participation in the virtual meeting has also been confirmed by the Kremlin, China on Tuesday had announced that Premier Li Qiang will attend the virtual G20 Leaders' Summit at India's ...

A day before Prime Minister Narendra Modi hosts a virtual summit of G20 leaders, India on Tuesday said the meeting will provide an opportunity to discuss the implementation of the Delhi Declaration, enhance cooperation on critical challenges and address gaps in global governance. Addressing a press conference on the summit, India's G20 Sherpa Amitabh Kant said that since the successful hosting of the leaders' summit on September 9 and 10 and the unanimous adoption of the New Delhi Declaration, the world has witnessed succession of events and several new challenges have emerged. He said that while development will be the main agenda of the meeting, the leaders may discuss many other issues. "The virtual summit will provide an opportunity not only to discuss the implementation of the leaders' declaration but also for the leaders to share views and enhance cooperation on critical challenges that we confront and address gaps in global governance, reaffirm our existing commitment to SDGs
Chinese Premier Li Qiang will attend the virtual G20 Leaders' Summit at India's invitation on Wednesday, the Chinese Foreign Ministry announced here on Tuesday. The summit will also delve into the impact of the Russia-Ukraine war and the Israel-Hamas conflict. It is also expected to push for the effective implementation of various decisions taken at the bloc's annual summit in New Delhi over two months back, the statement said. Li will attend the meeting at the invitation of the Indian government, China's Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Mao Ning told a media briefing, state-run Xinhua news agency reported. "I am happy that today around 130 countries from Latin America
