Mumbai boat accident: Naval driver lost control during trials, say police

The driver of the Naval craft, which rammed into a ferry off the Mumbai coast, lost control over the vessel during its engine trials, leading to the fatal crash mid-sea, an injured Navy staffer has told the police, an official said on Friday. The police, probing the accident, recorded the statement of the injured Navy staffer, who was on the speeding craft, which collided with the ferry 'Neel Kamal' on way to the Elephanta Island, a popular tourist destination, from the Gateway of India on late Wednesday afternoon. Fourteen persons, including four on the Naval speedboat, were killed in the collision which caused the ferry carrying more than 100 passengers to sink in the Arabian Sea. A team from the Colaba Police Station, which is investigating the case, recorded the statement of the injured Navy staffer, Karmaveer Yadav, who is undergoing treatment at a hospital, said the official. Few cracks found on surface of Gateway of India in Mumbai: Centre

Few cracks were found on the surface of the Gateway of India in Mumbai during an inspection but the overall structure was found to be in a "good state of preservation", Parliament was informed on Monday. Union Minister for Culture G Kishan Reddy said this in a written response to a query in Lok Sabha. He was asked whether a recent structural audit of the Gateway of India has revealed cracks along the facade. "The Gateway of India, Mumbai, is not a centrally-protected monument. It is under the protection of Department of Archaeology and Museums, Government of Maharashtra. Few cracks were found on the surface during the inspection. Police withdraw case against 36 involved in protest at Gateway of India

A court here has allowed Mumbai Police's plea to withdraw their case against 36 people involved in a protest at the Gateway of India after an attack on students at the Jawaharlal Nehru University in Delhi in January 2020. The police in their plea said the accused had committed the alleged act without any "personal interest or benefits". The Esplanade court's Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate S V Dindokar earlier this month allowed the application for withdrawal of the case. The order was made available on Monday. In the plea, filed through Additional Public Prosecutor Gautam Gaikwad, police contended that the accused persons did the alleged act as a protest "without any personal interest or benefits". "There is no loss of life as well as loss to public property," the police said.
