Science and tech minister hails role of glass industry in India's growth

Union minister Jitendra Singh on Monday praised the significance of the glass industry in driving India's future economic growth, while highlighting the need for enhanced collaboration and awareness among academics, R&D centres, and the private sector. Addressing the International Congress on Glass organised by CSIR-Central Glass and Ceramic Research Institute, the union minister of state for science and Technology and earth sciences stressed the growing importance of the recycling industry alongside manufacturing for sustainability. Glass is one sector which has a very high recyclability. The minister advocated for a "one institute one theme" approach to achieve better coordination and results. Singh also pushed for a campaign to raise public awareness about the glass industry's contributions to society. Corning bullish on mobile, life sciences; commits Rs 1,500 crore investment

High-tech glass company Corning is bullish on growth from mobile consumer electronics and life sciences businesses in India, a senior company official said on Thursday. The automotive and optical fibre business is the biggest revenue contributor to the company in the country, at present. Corning which started business by providing glass cover for bulb invented by Thomas Alva Edison has expanded into several verticals to provide glass technology ranging from electronics display protection cover for mobile, television displays, semiconductor manufacturing, space telescopes to glass based packaging for labs, vaccines etc. "We waited for ecosystem to be established in India where we are seeing now global players are already establishing footprints to manufacture smartphones, and we just want to be a part of the supply chain. Display glass biz likely to grow 10 times with AvanStrate Inc, says Vedanta

Vedanta Limited on Wednesday said its display glass business is expected to grow 10-fold, following the consolidation of its holding in AvanStrate Inc. Vedanta Ltd, in May this year, announced the acquisition of an additional 46.57 per cent stake in AvanStrate Inc, taking its total holding in the Japanese display glass manufacturer to about 98 per cent. ASI is now fully managed and controlled by Vedanta Limited and free from any external debt, according to a release. "Vedanta Limited announced that the display glass business is set to grow 10x after consolidating its holding in AvanStrate Inc. (ASI), a Japanese display glass manufacturer, to 98 per cent, following the acquisition of 46.57 per cent equity from Hoya Corporation," the release said. According to the release, ASI is set to drive innovation and expansion, focusing on the future of high-tech display and glass substrate manufacturing. Saint-Gobain plans to invest Rs 3,400 cr across segments in Tamil Nadu

Glassmaker and a player in housing solutions business Saint-Gobain India has committed investments worth Rs 3,400 crore in Tamil Nadu across business segments, which includes setting up of green and brownfield investments. The company exchanged documents with state government officials in the presence of Chief Minister M K Stalin during the Global Investors Meet held in the city. "We are investing Rs 3,400 crore across different businesses - glass wool, gypsum, plasterboard, plaster, acoustic ceiling, float glass, adhesives, sealants, in our next phase of expansion in Tamil Nadu," said B Santhanam CEO, Asia Pacific and India Region and Chairman, Saint-Gobain India.
