Govt unlikely to infuse capital in PSU general insurers in FY24: Official

The four public sector general insurance companies are unlikely to get capital funding from the government in the current fiscal, a senior official said. He said one of the PSU non-life insurance companies is likely to give a dividend to the government in the current fiscal and they will be able to meet their solvency margins. The government last year provided Rs 5,000 crore capital to three insurers --National Insurance Company, Oriental Insurance Company and United India Insurance Company. The Budget 2023-24 has not provided for the capital infusion for insurance companies. "We do not think there is a need for capital infusion as of now. In fact, one of the general insurance companies may give a dividend this year," the official said. Currently, there are four general insurance companies in India -- New India Assurance, United India Insurance, Oriental Insurance and National Insurance Company. Of this, only New India Assurance is better placed than the rest. Insurance companies

'Consideration', consensus required for women's reservation bill: Govt

The women's reservation bill requires "careful consideration" on the basis of consensus among all political parties before it is brought to Parliament, the government said in Rajya Sabha on Thursday. In a written reply to a question, Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal said gender justice is an important commitment of the government. "The issue involved needs careful consideration on the basis of the consensus among all political parties before a Bill for amendment in the Constitution is brought before Parliament," he said. The women's reservation bill provides for 33 per cent reservation for women in Lok Sabha and state assemblies for 15 years. The 15th Lok Sabha could not pass the bill and the Constitution (108th Amendment) Bill, which was pending in the lower House since 2010 and lapsed following its dissolution. All no confidence motions defeated or inconclusive in past; 3 govts fell

No confidence motions have been moved in Lok Sabha 27 times in the past, and all of them have either been defeated or remained inconclusive, data compiled by a think tank shows. However, at least thrice governments have fallen during vote on a 'motion of confidence', which is a motion brought by the government to prove its strength. A no confidence motion is a formal proposal moved by the opposition against the government in Lok Sabha under Rule 198 of the Rules of Procedure and Conduct of Business in Lok Sabha. According to data compiled by PRS Legislative Research, the highest number of no confidence motions - 15 - in the history of independent India was moved against governments led by Indira Gandhi. In 1979, a no confidence motion moved against the Morarji Desai government had led to his resignation, even as the debate remained inconclusive and there was no voting. Thrice governments have fallen during the vote of confidence - the VP Singh government in 1990, H D Devegowda ...
