Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Saturday asserted that his government was looking forward to not just achieving but "exceeding" the target of creating 10 lakh government jobs in the state. Speaking at a function organised here for the distribution of appointment letters to newly recruited teachers, Kumar said his government provided appointment letters to 96,823 newly recruited teachers at all district headquarters in the state during the day. "Here at Gandhi Maidan, a total of 26,935 newly recruited teachers are getting their appointment letters. We have so far provided government jobs to 3.63 lakh people in the state," he claimed. Expressing deep sorrow over the alleged suicide of a woman job aspirant here, Telangana Governor Tamilisai Soundararajan on Saturday sought a report from the Chief Secretary, DGP and secretary of state Public Service Commission within 48 hours on the incident. The untimely demise of Pravallika is a poignant reminder of the challenges and pressures faced by young aspirants preparing for competitive examinations, a Raj Bhavan press communique said. A committee has been formed by the Delhi government to streamline processing of appointment dossiers of select candidates by bringing more clarity over the applicability of non-creamy layer and economically weaker sections, officials said on Tuesday. The four-member panel will be headed by the services secretary. It will submit its action taken report till July 14. "Education director, deputy commissioner (headquarter) of revenue department, and secretary of the Delhi Subordinate Services Selection Board (DSSSB) will be members of the committee," said a memorandum issued by the services department recently. Officials said the appointment dossiers of over 1,800 select candidates are pending due to the issue. A candidate of OBC (other backward class) category falls in the non-creamy layer if his family income is less than Rs 8 lakh per annum. The EWS (economically weaker sections) category refers to those unreserved category candidates whose annual family income is below Rs 8 lakh.

The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) on Wednesday launched a toll-free helpline to help government job aspirants from economically weaker sections and backward classes among others. The UPSC conducts civil services examination to select the country's bureaucrats, diplomats and police officers among others and also holds other tests to recruit government officers. "This initiative is also a part of the commission's endeavour of undertaking queries of such candidates in a friendly manner," the UPSC said in a statement. The helpline will remain operational on all working days during the office hours, it said. The initiative is part of celebrations under the 'Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav' to commemorate the 75th anniversary of Indian Independence.
