Vadodara IOCL refinery fire: Toll rises to 2; probe into cause ongoing

The death toll in a fire at the Indian Oil Corporation (IOCL) refinery in Gujarat's Vadodara city has gone up to two, while another injured person was undergoing treatment, police said on Tuesday. The fire that began on Monday afternoon with a blast in a benzene storage tank of the refinery later spread to two other adjoining tanks, Jawahar Nagar police station inspector A B Mori said. The blaze was brought under control after efforts which continued till the wee hours of Tuesday, he said. Two persons -- Dhimant Makwana and Shailesh Makwana -- died in the fire. An IOCL official received injuries and was undergoing treatment at a private hospital, Mori said. The condition of the injured person was stable, he said. The blaze was brought under control after extensive efforts involving several fire tenders brought in from nearby cities and towns, officials said. The Congress on Friday attacked Prime Minister Narendra Modi, asking why Gujarat's white onion farmers were given preferential treatment over Maharashtra's onion farmers, and why has the BJP "diluted" Adivasis' forest rights in Maharashtra. Construction of 12 river bridges completed for Gujarat bullet train project

The construction of 12 out of the total 20 river bridges in Gujarat for the 508-km long Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train corridor has been completed, officials said on Sunday. The 120-metre-long bridge on the Kharera river in Navsari district is the 12th such structure to be recently completed in Gujarat, the National High Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL) said. The bullet train project covers Gujarat (352 km) and Maharashtra (156 km), with a total of 12 stations planned at Mumbai, Thane, Virar, Boisar, Vapi, Bilimora, Surat, Bharuch, Vadodara, Anand/Nadiad, Ahmedabad and Sabarmati. The train is expected to sharply reduce the travel time between Ahmedabad and Mumbai to around 3 hours from the current 6 to 8 hours. PM to lay foundation stone of Rs 280 cr projects during Gujarat visit

Prime Minster Narendra Modi will visit Gujarat on October 30-31 during which he will participate in Rashtriya Ekta Diwas celebrations, and inaugurate and lay the foundation stone of various development projects worth over Rs 280 crore. During the visit, the prime minister will also address the Officer Trainees of the 99th Common Foundation Course in Aarambh 6.0. On October 30, he will travel to Ekta Nagar, Kevadia, where at around 5:30 pm, he will inaugurate and lay the foundation stone of various infrastructural and development projects worth over Rs 280 crore, a statement issued by the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) said. PM Modi, Spanish counterpart to inaugurate Tata's C-295 aircraft facility

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Spanish counterpart, Pedro Sanchez, will inaugurate the Tata aircraft complex in Gujarat's Vadodara on Monday for manufacturing C-295 aircraft by Tata Advanced Systems. The Prime Minister's Office (PMO), in a statement on Saturday, said this will be the first private sector final assembly line for military aircraft in India. During the visit to his home state, Modi will also launch development projects worth more than Rs 4,900 crore in Amreli. The PMO said 40 aircraft will be built in the Vadodara facility as part of the agreement, while aviation behemoth Airbus will deliver 16 aircraft directly.
