The Enforcement Directorate on Thursday conducted multi-city searches in Gujarat in connection with a money laundering case linked to a GST "fraud" in which eight people, including a journalist, were arrested recently by the state police, official sources said. About 23 premises in cities of Rajkot, Junagadh, Ahmedabad, Bhavnagar and Veraval were being raided by the federal agency after a case was filed under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), the sources said. Premises linked to arrested journalist Mahesh Langa, who works with The Hindu newspaper, were also being covered. The money laundering case stems from an FIR of the Ahmedabad Police Crime Branch. The Supreme Court on Wednesday deferred hearing on a contempt plea against Gujarat authorities for allegedly illegally demolishing residential and religious structures in the state despite an interim stay and without its prior nod. A bench of Justices B R Gavai, P K Mishra and K V Viswanathan listed the plea after three weeks. The plea seeks initiation of contempt proceedings against state authorities for alleged violation of the apex court's September 17 order that there shall be no demolition of properties, including of those accused of crimes, across the country without its permission. At the outset, a lawyer sought pass-over of the hearing on behalf of the solicitor general representing the state authorities. With this, 1,289 kilograms of cocaine and 40 kilograms of hydroponic Thailand marijuana worth Rs 13,000 crore have been seized by the law enforcement agencies within a fortnight in Delhi and Gujarat, sources said. Delhi Police's Special Cell and Gujarat Police on Sunday claimed to have recovered 518 kilograms cocaine during a search conducted at a pharmaceutical company in Ankleshwar. Value of the seized cocaine in the international market is said to be around Rs 5,000 crore, sources said. Five labourers were killed after soil caved in on them at a construction site in Gujarat's Mehsana district on Saturday, police said. The incident occurred near Kadi town, around 37 km from the district headquarters. Several labourers were digging a pit for an underground tank for a factory at Jasalpur village when loose soil caved in and buried them alive, inspector Prahaladsinh Vaghela of Kadi police station said. "Five bodies have been recovered, and three to four other labourers are feared buried. A rescue operation is going on," he said.
