Hackers may have access to information on millions of British voters: EC

Hackers may have information on tens of millions of British voters after they got access to electoral registers, the UK's election watchdog said on Tuesday nearly a year after the breach was discovered. The Electoral Commission apologized for the breach but said much of the information was already in the public domain and that the names and addresses of people who registered to vote between 2014 and 2022 was unlikely to be used by hostile actors to sway election results. The UK's democratic process is significantly dispersed and key aspects of it remain based on paper documentation and counting," said Shaun McNally, the commission's chief executive. This means it would be very hard to use a cyber-attack to influence the process." The commission reported the breach to the Information Commissioner's Office within three days of discovering it last October. The Guardian quoted the commission as saying that it did not report the attack immediately to the public because it needed to bre

China-based hackers breached govt agencies, individual accounts: Microsoft

China called a Microsoft report that a China-based hacking group breached government-linked email accounts disinformation, saying Wednesday that the accusation was meant to divert attention from US cyber activities. In a blog post published Tuesday, Microsoft said the group, which it identified as Storm-0558, gained access to email accounts linked to 25 organisations, including Western European government agencies. The breach was detected weeks later when customers complained to Microsoft about abnormal mail activity. We assess this adversary is focused on espionage, such as gaining access to email systems for intelligence collection, Charlie Bell, Microsoft's executive vice president of security, said in a separate Microsoft post. A Washington Post report cited a statement from US officials claiming Storm-0558 also breached unclassified email accounts linked to the US government. A Chinese foreign ministry spokesman, Wang Wenbin, said the accusation was disinformation aimed at ..

Threat actors don't have access to entire CoWIN portal, database: Report

After the Union health ministry dismissed reports of a data breach on the CoWIN platform, cyber security firm CloudSEK has said that threat actors do not have access to the entire portal nor the backend database. "Based on matching fields from Telegram data and previously reported incidents affecting health workers of a region, we assume the information was scraped through these compromised credentials," CloudSEK said in a report on Monday after an independent analysis. On March 13, a threat actor on a Russian cybercrime forum advertised for compromised access on the CoWIN portal of Tamil Nadu region, it said. After an analysis, CloudSEK said, it was discovered the breach was that of a health worker and not really of the infrastructure. The content displayed on the screenshot matches with the Telegram bot mentioned in the media as follows -- name of the individual, mobile number, identity proof, identification number and number of doses completed. "Furthermore, there are numerous .

State-sponsored Chinese hackers could be prepping for disruption: Microsoft

State-backed Chinese hackers have been targeting US critical infrastructure and could be laying the technical groundwork for the potential disruption of critical communications between the US and Asia during future crises, Microsoft said Wednesday. The targets include sites in Guam, where the U.S. has a major military presence, the company said. Hostile activity in cyberspace from espionage to the advanced positioning of malware for potential future attacks has become a hallmark of modern geopolitical rivalry. Microsoft said in a blog post that the state-sponsored group of hackers, which it calls Volt Typhoon, has been active since mid-2021. It said organizations affected by the hacking which seeks persistent access are in the communications, manufacturing, utility, transportation, construction, maritime, information technology and education sectors. Separately, the National Security Agency, the FBI, the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) and their ...
