The mortality rate due to Acute Encephalitis Syndrome (AES) cases in Bihar has come down significantly due to strategic interventions made by the central government, Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan said Tuesday. Holding a review meeting on the status of AES cases, he said a round-the-clock point-of-care testing facility has been set up at SKMCH hospital in Muzaffarpur, Bihar to monitor vital parameters of patients such as blood gases, electrolytes, lactate etc. The hospital has accounted for 111 casualties due to AES, the maximum number in the state, since June 1. "This facility is being further strengthened by deployment of biochemists and technicians from central government hospitals in Delhi," Vardhan said. In the past 48 hours, there have been only five AES related admissions at SKMCH, he said. The minister said diagnostics have also been strengthened at the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) in Bihar and a portable X-ray with Computed Radiography (CR) digital is being set ..
Women who undergo radiation therapy to treat childhood brain tumour are more likely to suffer long-term cognitive impairment than male survivors, claims a study. The study was published in the 'Journal of the International Neuropsychological Society'."Some of the survivors are doing quite well. Others are quite devastated by the treatments. So, there's a huge range in outcomes and we are trying to look at the various factors involved that may explain these differences," said Tricia King, senior author of the study."Instead of research focused only on whether or not someone lives, we are now looking at the quality of survival. What's happened now is the push for precision medicine that will provide individualised treatment to optimise outcomes. Our team is interested in identifying critical factors that may contribute to better long-term outcomes of survivors," said King.Tanya Panwala, the lead author of the study, said the researchers focused on sex differences. "That was something ...

Poor sleep quality and erratic bedtime may adversely affect the ability of older adults to recall information about past events, a study has found. Researchers from Georgia Institute of Technology in the US also found unexpected racial differences in the type of sleep patterns tied to lower memory performance across both younger and older African American research participants. The findings, journal Frontiers in Human Neuroscience, may help open up a new area of research aimed at understanding the potential connection between poor sleep and the memory declines associated with ageing. The study also underscores the importance of sleep in maintaining good cognitive functioning. "The night-to-night variability in the older study participants had a major impact on their performance in tests aimed at evaluating episodic memory," said Audrey Duarte, an associate professor in Georgia Tech. "The association between sleep and memory has been known, but this study's novelty is showing that the .

As India embarks on a massive healthcare programme, a top US official behind the rejuvenated healthcare system of the Trump administration feels if not structured appropriately, it can take a growing amount of the national budget. Seema Verma, 48, Administrator of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, serving in the Trump administration, also said such programmes should be designed to promote competition. "I'm always careful not to comment on other countries' efforts. I think every country has their own set of unique challenges. What I will say from my own experience, looking at the programmes that the United States has, one of the things that I have learned over time is that creating an open-ended entitlement programme can have a very significant impact on the entire government," Verma told PTI. Open-ended entitlement means that as long as a state is willing to spend more state funds to pay for qualified benefits for eligible recipients, the federal government is obliged ..
