U'khand CM, Ramdev attend wedding of NRI Atul Gupta's son

A host of VIPs including Uttarakhand Chief Minister Trivendra Singh Rawat and Yoga guru Ramdev Saturday attended the wedding of South Africa-based NRI industrialist Atul Gupta's son Shashank here in Auli. Shashank tied the knot with Dubai-based realtor Vishal Jalan's daughter Shivangi at a glittering ceremony at the internationally acclaimed ski resort in the hill-state. The chief minister gave his blessings to to the newlyweds and thanked the Guptas for choosing Auli as the venue for their sons' weddings saying it will promote the place as a wedding destination besides giving a boost to tourism. Shashank's cousin Suryakant had also married at the same venue two days ago. Remains of british-era bridge reappear in Dhanushkodi after 50

Remains of a road bridge at the coastal town of Dhanushkodi here, which got buried under sand after a devastating cyclone struck more than five decades ago, reappeared Saturday due to erosion caused by rough sea. The sides of the bridge, 20 feet wide and and 60 feet long, were intact though they were wet, officials said. The part of the bridge close to the shore remained covered under sand dunes for more than 50 years. The bridge resurfaced after strong winds and high tide caused erosion of the sand in the past few days. Dhanushkodi, a holy destination for pilgrims and tourists at the south-eastern tip of Rameswaram island in Tamil Nadu, was a commercial centre since 1914, as the British operated goods ferry from this town to Thalaimannar in Sri Lanka. The entire Dhanushkodi was swept by tidal waves in 1964, after which both road and rail link to the town got disconnected, and it came to be known as a 'ghost town.' Prime Minister Narendra Modi Saturday congratulated those who have been conferred with the Prime Minister's Award for Outstanding Contribution for Promotion and Development of Yoga, 2019. Artists Pattnaik, Laxmi celebrate Yoga Day with their works of sand art

Egypt halts hot air ballooning in Luxor after incident

Egypt has suspended hot air ballooning rides over ancient sites in Luxor after strong winds took 11 tourists, including five from India, off course the day before and forced them to land in the country's southern desert. Local authorities said on Friday the rides would not resume until an investigation is completed. The tourists - five Indians, four Chinese, a British and an Egyptian - were ballooning over ancient temples when the strong winds blew them westward into the desert. Their pilot managed to regain control of the balloon and they eventually landed safely. Egyptian officials say ballooning companies are being inspected for adherence to safety measures. The official spoke on condition of anonymity under regulations. Hot air ballooning over Luxor is popular, with balloons taking nearly 360 tourists over the city every day.

Rafting-related activities suspended in Kashmir Valley

In the wake of killing of three people during rafting expeditions in Lidder stream in Pahalgam resort, authorities in Kashmir have suspended such activities in the valley till a proper mechanism is put in place. The Tourism Department of Kashmir on late Thursday evening ordered suspension of rafting-related activities in the entire valley till a proper mechanism is put in place. "In the interest of administration and safety of tourists, it is hereby ordered that all rafting-related activities at all tourist destinations particularly at Pahalgam and Sonamarg shall remain suspended till a proper mechanism / technical guidance is put in place at all such locations," the order read. The tourism director has asked the officers concerned to ensure implementation of the order in letter and spirit and also report its compliance. Want to do 2-4 'village stays' every month: Karnataka CM Kumaraswamy

Karnataka Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy on Friday revived his 2006 rural outreach programme, in which he stayed at the homes of villagers.Kicking off the programme today, the chief minister said he wanted to start two to four programmes on 'Grama Vaastavya' or the village stay tour every month."It (village stay tour) will start from today onwards.
