Climate change imminent, focus on areas like Green Hydrogen needed: PM Modi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday stressed on the need to focus on new areas of energy transition like Green Hydrogen to deal with climate change saying it is not a matter of future rather it calls for an action now. Addressing through a video message the 2nd International Conference on Green Hydrogen India 2024, Modi said, "There is a growing realisation that climate change is not just a matter of the future. The impact of climate change is being felt here and now. The time for action is also here and now." He was of the view that energy transition and sustainability have become central to global policy discourse. He noted that Green Hydrogen is emerging as a promising addition to the world's energy landscape and it can help in decarbonizing industries that are difficult to electrify. Refineries, fertilizers, steel, heavy-duty transportation -- many such sectors will benefit, he pointed out. Green Hydrogen can also act as a storage solution for surplus renewable energy, h

Essar Energy Transition, SSE partner for 40MW green hydrogen project

Essar Energy Transition (EET) teamed up with UK gas-fired power generator SSE to build a 40 MW green hydrogen project in northwest England, the firm said on Tuesday. "SSE and EET Hydrogen have begun development work on the innovative project at the Stanlow Manufacturing Complex in Ellesmere Port in Cheshire," the firm said in a statement. Known as Gowy Green Hydrogen, it takes its name from the River Gowy and nearby Gowy Meadows Nature Reserve. The initial expected 40 MW facility will deliver hydrogen to industrial offtakers in the region to support them to decarbonise their operations, helping to secure and grow jobs in the region. Gowy Green Hydrogen could be operational as early as 2028, with feasibility studies completed and design and site investigation works underway, the statement said without giving financial details. "A planning application is expected to move forward in 2025 ahead of any final investment decision being made by the two parties," it said. The UK has a str

Tata Steel, Welspun jointly develop hydrogen-compliant grade steel pipes

Tata Steel and Welspun Corp have jointly developed hydrogen-compliant grade steel pipes for transportation of the gaseous hydrogen, a statement said on Friday. The development assumes significance as hydrogen transportation is critical for its usage in different sectors. "Tata Steel and Welspun Corp achieved the significant milestone of developing hydrogen compliant API X65 grade pipes, which successfully surpassed all necessary critical sour service and fracture qualification tests for transportation of 100 per cent pure gaseous hydrogen under high pressure at RINA, Italy," Tata Steel said in a statement. Tata Steel and Welspun Corp have become the first Indian companies to produce electric resistance welded (ERW) pipes for transportation of gaseous hydrogen, it said. In 2022, Tata Steel and Welspun Corp entered into a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to develop hydrogen-compliant API-grade pipes through the ERW Pipe route. As part of the partnership, Tata Steel said it has supp

MNRE issues incentive guidelines for green hydrogen producers under SIGHT

The renewable energy ministry has issued guidelines for providing incentives to green hydrogen producers under SIGHT scheme. The guidelines for implementation of Tranche-II under Strategic Interventions for Green Hydrogen Transition (SIGHT) programme were notified by the ministry on July 3, 2024. The capacity of Tranche-II will be 450,000 tonne per annum (TPA) of green hydrogen, with 40,000 TPA capacity reserved for biomass-based pathways (bucket- II) and the rest for technology agnostic pathways (bucket-I), a statement by Ministry of New & Renewable Energy said. Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI) is the implementing agency for this tranche as well. The Request for Selection (RfS) shall be issued by SECI shortly. The bidding shall be based on the least average incentive quoted by the bidder. The minimum bid under bucket-I is 10,000 TPA while the maximum bid is 90,000 TPA. The minimum bid capacity in bucket-II is 500 TPA and the maximum capacity is 4000 TPA. A bidder can bid

Essar to invest Rs 30,000 cr in green hydrogen plant in Gujarat over 4 yrs

Essar Group plans to invest Rs 30,000 crore over the next four years in setting up a green hydrogen plant at Jamnagar in Gujarat as the metals-to-infrastructure conglomerate eyes clean energy as a key pillar for its new phase of growth. The conglomerate is looking to decarbonise its oil refinery in the UK, construct a green steel plant in Saudi Arabia, and build an LNG and electric ecosystem to decarbonise long-haul heavy trucks, Prashant Ruia, director of Essar Capital, which manages the group's portfolio of investments, said. It is also considering an entry into mining of critical minerals, mainly used in electric vehicle batteries, solar panels and wind-turbine magnets. Essar Future Energy plans to develop 1 gigawatt of hydrogen capacity along with associated green molecules capacity of 1 million tonne per annum in Jamnagar over the next four years, he said in an interview with PTI. "We are going to invest around Rs 30,000 crore (in the green hydrogen project in Jamnagar)," he .

Varanasi pilot for deployment of green hydrogen fuel cell vessels on NW-I

Varanasi has been selected as the pilot location for deployment of green hydrogen fuel cell inland vessels on National Waterways-I, aligning with the government's Harit Nauka guidelines, an official statement said on Friday. Discussions are ongoing with potential players for facilities like bunkering, it added. It was also informed that due to its low emission qualities, methanol is also actively considered one of the key green fuels for EXIM Vessels globally, as seen in the recent case of Maersk's deployment of methanol-powered ships, the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways (MoPSW) said in the statement. Going forward, the statement said, it was suggested to explore mechanisms of developing indigenous development of methanol marine engines in the country as a progressive step towards the green transition of inland vessels. The MoPSW, along with Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL) and Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI), on April 23-24 organised a two-day conference in Kochi
