Power Minister R K Singh calls for study on impact of hydro projects

Power Minister R K Singh on Wednesday brushed aside apprehensions that water storage or dam projects, which also generate hydro electricity, harm environment, and urged experts to commission an authoritative and scientific study to find out the truth. Speaking at a symposium on sustainable development of dams and river basins, Singh said, "I have not seen science of environment being harmed. I see science of progress in this (water storage). Punjab and Haryana developed and they are where they are today because of Bhakra Nangal dam." He further said, "If you ask any person in Bihar, then his dearest wish is to construct large dams on the river Kosi in Nepal. Wherever we constructed large dams, we have improved the lives of people...generations. This is the message we need to convey." He brought attention toward pushback to water storage or dam projects in the country by NGOs (non-government organisations) or civil societies which claim that these would harm environment. Uncharted waters for hydropower's renewable energy status

The government's proposal to classify all hydro power projects under the category of renewable energy (RE) would help the country meet its targets under the Paris Climate Change Summit. However, it poses other questions for the sector. At present, hydro power projects below 25 Mw are considered as RE and come under administrative purview of the ministry of new and renewable energy (MNRE). Large hydro is with the ministry of power and so is the largest hydro power company, NHPC.With the move, the government intends to meet its Intended Nationally Determined Contributions (INDC) targets, as committed in the Paris Climate Change Summit-2016, said officials. The Indian government had committed to 40 per cent of its total energy generation from renewable sources. Solar and wind power cumulatively contribute 15 per cent to the energy mix. Adding hydro would take the total close to 30 per cent. The current generation capacity of hydro is 44,189 Mw out of the total installed capacity of ...
