World Cup: Needed Virat Kohli to go out and play the situation - Rohit

From outside, Virat Kohli's record equalling 101 off 121 balls against South Africa on Sunday might look a bit laborious, but Indian captain Rohit Sharma termed the innings as one that suited the conditions and the match situation. Kohli's 49th ODI hundred paved the way for India's 326 for five on a slightly diffident Eden Gardens pitch, which proved way over the par in the end. "If you look at how we have played in the last three games, we have adapted better. Today, we needed Kohli to go out there and play to the situation. We then knew we had to keep it in the right areas (with the ball) and let the pitch do the rest," said Rohit during the post-match presentation. Rohit was quite chuffed with the way middle-order batter Shreyas Iyer and pacer Mohammed Shami repaid the management's faith in this World Cup. Iyer made an outstanding 77 off 87 balls while Shami picked a wicket that swelled his tally in the tournament to 15. Rohit said he would have kept his faith in them even if t

World Cup: Virat deserves all credit for batting in afternoon - Jadeja

It was a special hundred by Virat Kohli not just because it was a historic milestone but also because the dogged century came in toughest of conditions that did not aid stroke-making, India all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja said on Sunday. Jadeja said the Eden Gardens track offered more turn in the afternoon when the South African spinners bowled, compared to the evening when Indian bowlers operated. India's forever Most Valuable Player' (MVP) himself left an impact on the game by scoring an unbeaten 29 not out and taking 5 for 33 but it was the peerless Kohli, who was adjudged the Player of the Match award for his record-equalling unbeaten 101. "I think this will be very special for Virat himself. It was a very tough pitch and at times, it seemed that even 260-270 looked par," Jadeja said at post-match conference. "He rotated the strike and at stage when runs dried up and their spinners were bowling well, to rotate strike and remain not out while taking score beyond 300, it takes effort

PM lauds Indian cricket team on victory against South Africa in World Cup

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday hailed the Indian cricket team's win over South Africa in the World Cup and said they have also given a "great birthday gift" to Virat Kohli. On his 35th birthday, Kohli equalled his idol Sachin Tendulkar's record of most ODI centuries with his 49th hundred, laying the foundation for India's 243-run thrashing of South Africa in the World Cup on Sunday. In a post on X, Modi said, "Our cricket team is triumphant yet again! Congratulations to the team for a splendid performance against South Africa. Great teamwork." "They have also given a great birthday gift to Virat Kohli, who played a lovely innings today," he said.

Notice issued to BCCI seeking info on ticket sales for today's WC match

Amid allegations of black marketing of tickets for Sunday's World Cup cricket match between India and South Africa at Eden Gardens, Kolkata Police issued a notice to BCCI president Roger Binny seeking information on ticket sales for the event, a senior officer said. The notice, which was issued late on Saturday evening, asked the BCCI president to submit documents to the officer of the Maidan police station who is investigating the complaints regarding black marketing of the tickets, he said. "A notice was sent to the BCCI president, asking him to provide relevant documents and information regarding the sale of tickets either personally or through any competent person of his organisation to the investigating officer of Maidan PS during working hours on Tuesday," the officer told PTI. Kohli at 35: Journey to top started at Garden of Eden 14 summers ago

The entire Mohun Bagan cricket team was on celebratory mode having just won the P. Sen Trophy at the Eden Gardens back in 2009, barring one individual. From a distance, the architect of that crown was quietly sitting on a famous white coloured cane-chair, forever planted outside the Eden dressing room. He looked at the celebrations with utmost nonchalance. Virat Kohli was all of 20, already an U-19 World Cup captain, touted as the next big thing in Indian cricket but a solitary half-century in five ODIs wasn't a reflection of what one was going to witness over the next decade. As Kohli steps onto field on his 35th birthday, against South Africa in-front of of a packed crowd on the same hallowed turf, there would be an over-riding feeling among the handful who had watched the genius in the making 14 summers ago. In extreme heat and humidity, Kohli scored 184 off just 121 balls in that final match against Town Club. It was not even a decent club attack but in those challenging ...

World Cup 2023 IND vs SA Preview: Unbeaten India face formidable Proteas

The top spot is at stake and an unconquered Indian team will certainly feel a sense of deja vu when it takes on a red-hot South Africa on Sunday in what will be a battle of equals in the World Cup. It promises to be a fascinating contest and Virat Kohli and Ravichandran Ashwin can't escape that "been there in this position" feeling since they were part of the World Cup squad that had a similar run in 2011. The only game that India had lost in the 2011 edition was against South Africa when an unheralded Robin Peterson had smashed Ashish Nehra for 19 runs after Indian batting imploded in Nagpur despite a hundred from Sachin Tendulkar. Kohli, who is one short of record-equalling 49th ODI hundred, and Ashwin are the only players in the current squad who were part of India's title-winning run. On Sunday, Rohit Sharma's players need to guard themselves from complacency and emulate the all-conquering Australian team of 2007 which won the World Cup without losing a single game. A win and

World Cup 2023: Team needs to learn a few lessons feel Kane Williamson

New Zealand suffered a gut-wrenching 21-run defeat against Pakistan on Saturday to leave their World Cup campaign on a shaky ground, prompting Kane Williamson to say that his team needed to "learn a few lessons". The defeat via DLS method against Pakistan was their fourth in a row in the tournament, leaving the Kiwis in a must-win situation against Sri Lanka on November 9 here and they will also have to keep the net run rate equations in mind. There's a lot left in this tournament for us. It's a frustrating result for us after so much of it going so well today. We need to move on and focus on our next challenge take the positives, learn a few lessons, said skipper Williamson in the post-match press conference. Williamson said his side will have to get some clarity in their thoughts ahead of the match against the Lankans. "The approach will be very similar. We can't rely on other teams as you get down to some small margins of whether it's run rate or your last match. Our focus is v

World Cup 2023: Sri Lanka cancel training in "severely" polluted Delhi

Sri Lanka cancelled their opening training session in the national capital on Saturday due to "severe" air pollution but Bangladesh braved the adverse weather conditions to train, a day after choosing to skip their practice session. Bangladesh, who arrived here on Wednesday, had decided against practising on Friday as the pollution levels in the city hit the "severe plus" category. Sri Lanka followed them into staying indoors on Saturday when the Air Quality Index stood at 407 in the morning. "It was cancelled owing to the air quality issue," said a SLC source, referring to the Saturday's training session. However, Bangladesh players, wearing masks, came out for practice at the Feroz Shah Kotla. An AQI between zero and 50 is considered "good", 51 and 100 "satisfactory", 101 and 200 "moderate", 201 and 300 "poor", 301 and 400 "very poor", and 401 and 500 "severe". It is unlikely that the International Cricket Council (ICC) will shift the game out of Delhi but the call on whether t

World Cup 2023, IND vs SA: Dravid feels pacers have overshadowed Jadeja

Rahul Dravid has always been big on data but when it comes to judging Ravindra Jadeja's exceptional performance, the Indian coach looks more at situational impact rather than dry statistics that reveal less and conceal more. Jadeja has scored 81 runs in three innings and taken nine wickets in 55.3 overs with an economy rate of 3.78. These are very solid figures without being exceptional like the 400-plus runs from Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli or the 29 wickets that Jasprit Bumrah (15 in seven games) and Mohammed Shami (14 in three games) have shared between them. "It's been exceptional. I think, you know, Jadeja, someone, if you look at the numbers, we look at stats, we look at data, we look at it quite a lot. I mean, he has been exceptional in this tournament," Dravid said when asked about someone like Jadeja's contribution. "Because of how good our seamers have been and how fantastic it has been to watch them upfront, the performances of people like Jaddu (Jadeja) and Kuldeep ...
