ECB CEO backs ICC model, says India justified in getting 38% of earnings

India make immense contribution in driving revenues and fuelling the growth of cricket globally and deserve to earn USD 230 million per year from 2024 to 2027 under ICC's proposed financial model, feels ECB chief executive officer Richard Gould. According to the new proposed distribution model, the Indian cricket board (BCCI) could earn 38.5 per cent of the USD 600 million earnings over the next four year commercial cycle with the ECB (USD 41.33 million) and Cricket Australia (USD 37.53 million) being the next highest earners. The PCB is likely to take home USD 34.51 million (5.75 per cent), while the rest will be shared by the remaining eight full members. In total, the 12 full members will get USD 532.84 million (88.81 per cent) with the remaining USD 67.16 million (11.19 per cent) going to the associate members out of the USD 600 million projected pool. The proposals, which are due to be ratified by the ICC, were criticised as it will only further increase the financial disparit

ICC Cricket Committee scraps 'soft signal' by on-field umpires

The ICC has decided to do away with the contentious 'soft signal' by on-field officials, which had often been criticised by experts as it is believed to have created more confusion for TV umpires after a decision was referred upstairs. The 'soft signal' was used to determine the validity of catches taken inches off the ground, which couldn't necessarily be confirmed through naked eye. Till now the on-field umpire would either signal 'out' or 'not out' based on their gut feeling. And the third umpire was compelled to go by 'soft signal' as most of the footages proved to be inconclusive. The ICC announced changes to the 'playing conditions' after the CEC approved the recommendations from the men's cricket committee led by Sourav Ganguly and the women's cricket committee. "The major change involved the soft signal being scrapped, with umpires no longer required to give a soft signal when referring decisions to the TV umpire. The on-field umpires will consult with the TV umpire before

NZ announce no change for Test series against SL; to tour UAE in August

New Zealand have named an unchanged squad for the two-Test series against Sri Lanka at home that recently defeated England by just one run at Wellington. The Blackcaps had defeated the Ben Stokes-led England in a thrilling second match to level the two-Test series 1-1. New Zealand Cricket (NZC) on Thursday announced a 13-member squad under captain Tim Southee for the series beginning on March 9, with no surprises, although rookie seamer Jacob Duffy, leg-spinner Ish Sodhi, and injured pace bowler Kyle Jamieson have been excluded. New Zealand recently became only the fourth team in history to win a Test after being asked to follow-on at Wellington, with pace bowler Neil Wagner taking the wicket of James Anderson to signal the home team's thrilling one-run win. Former captain Kane Williamson will continue to be the batting mainstay along with Tom Latham, Henry Nicholls, Devon Conway, Daryl Mitchell and Will Young, while Tom Blundell will keep wickets during the Sri Lanka series. Attack on Prithvi Shaw: Court sends influencer to 14-day judicial custody

A Mumbai court on Monday sent social media influencer Sapna Gill and three other accused to 14-day judicial custody in a case pertaining to alleged manhandling of Indian cricketer Prithvi Shaw and attacking his car. Gill and the other accused were produced before a magistrate court at the end of their initial police remand on Monday. The police sought an extension of the remand, saying they need to recover the baseball bat and the vehicle used in the alleged crime. However, the court rejected the plea and remanded the accused in judicial custody. Apart from the original charges of rioting and extortion, the police have also added Indian Penal Code Section 387 (putting a person in fear of death or of grievous hurt in order to commit extortion) in the case. Gill's lawyer Kaashif Ali Khan said in the court that the additional section was added belatedly just to harass the accused. The incident took place last Wednesday outside a luxury hotel at Santacruz area of Mumbai following an

Women's T20 World Cup: India need to up their game against England

After being put under pressure in their previous two games, India will have no room for error when they take on a formidable England in the Women's T20 World Cup here on Friday. A win against world number two England on Friday will take the Harmanpreet Kaur-led side effectively into the knock-out stage, to be competed among top two teams from Group 1 and 2. The Indians beat arch-rivals Pakistan by seven wickets before notching a more convincing six-wicket win against West Indies earlier this week. While the twin wins put India in a strong position to qualify for the semifinals, it was hard-hitting teenager Richa Ghosh's brilliance which pulled the 'Women in Blue' over the line on both occasions. Against England, the top-order will have to give a better account of themselves. U-19 World Cup-winning captain Shafali Verma has been unable to convert her starts in the tournament so far, giving away her wicket at crucial junctures. ICC apologises for ranking glitch which showed India as No.1 Test side

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has apologised for the technical glitch, which saw India displace Australia to attain the No.1 spot in the men's Test team rankings on Wednesday. Hours after India had 'topped' the Test ranking, the ICC issued another updated list that showed Rohit Sharma's side back at No.2. It gave the impression that Rohit's team had briefly claimed the top spot following its innings and 132-run win over the Pat Cummins-led Australia in Nagpur. On Thursday, the game's global body admitted the error and said in a statement that the "ICC acknowledges, for a short period of time on February 15, 2023 that, due to a technical error, India were erroneously displayed as the No.1 Test team on the ICC website. "We apologise for any inconvenience caused." "Australia remain on top of the ICC Test Team Rankings after the latest update following the conclusion of Zimbabwe's two-match series against West Indies." Ravindra Jadeja takes four as India manages to restrict Australia to 174/8

Come-back man Ravindra Jadeja (4/45) struck four times as India reduced Australia to 174 for eight at tea on day one of the opening Test here on Thursday. The left-arm spinner, who returned from a knee injury, was the wrecker-in-chief during the second session as he broke the partnership between Steve Smith (37) and Marnus Labuschagne (49) before trapping Matt Renshaw and Todd Murphy. Alex Carrey scored a 33-ball 36 before veteran off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin (2/41), who was the other wicket-taker for India in the second session, ended his stay in the middle. Earlier, pacers Mohammed Shami (1/12) and Mohammed Siraj (1/13) dealt early blows to the visitors, removing openers Usman Khwaja (1) and David Warner (1) within the first three overs. Smith and Labuschagne stitched a 82-run partnership for the third wicket.
