The Bureau of Civil Aviation Security has approved the Delhi Police's traffic plan for the G20 Summit that will entail reopening a carriageway at the arrival zone of IGI Airport Terminal 3 which was closed by the airport operator a few months ago. The closure of the third carriageway, the farthest away from the terminal-3 building, triggered a tug of war between Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL) and the police, which said the airport operator's action was "against the rules". In view of the G20 Summit scheduled for September 9 and 10, the Delhi Police presented a traffic plan in a meeting with BCAS on Wednesday. According to the traffic plan, the first and second carriageways will be dedicated to VIPs and VIP pass holders respectively and the third carriageway would receive verified commercial vehicles and private vehicles carrying physically challenged, disabled and elderly people, pregnant women and children. The dual elevated Eastern Cross Taxiways and the fourth runway at the Delhi airport will be operational from July 13, that will enhance capacity amid growing air traffic, a senior official said on Friday. The Eastern Cross Taxiways (ECT), which is 2.1 kilometres long and can accommodate wide-body aircraft, will reduce the time spent on the tarmac by passengers after landing and before take-off of their flights. It will also help in reducing aircraft emissions and enhance efficiency. The Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA), which is also the country's largest airport, currently has three operational runways and handles more than 1,500 aircraft movements every day. With the fourth runway, eventually, the airport will have enhanced capacity to handle more aircraft movements. In FY23, the airport, which has three terminals now, handled around 65.33 million passengers, including 15.65 million international passengers. Phase 3A expansion work is going on at the Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA), which is operated by Delhi International Airport Ltd (DIAL). "Post completion of Phase 3A expansion work scheduled in 2023, Delhi airport will become the only Indian airport whose terminals would be able to handle 100 million passengers per annum (MPPA)," it said in a release. Air India on Monday deboarded an unruly passenger from its Delhi-London flight, which returned to the national capital, according to sources. The sources said flight AI 111, which had around 225 passengers, returned to the Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) here as there was an unruly male passenger onboard. The Delhi Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) on Tuesday withdrew its earlier order directing teachers to be deployed at the Indira Gandhi International Airport to enforce Covid protocols, officials said. The new order said teachers and other teaching staff, who were to be deployed, are exempted from airport duty for the period of December 31 to January 15. "Further, in case required, civil defence volunteers from district west may be deputed on call out duty basis," the order issued by the district magistrate (west) stated.
