The Indian Institute of Mass Communication (IIMC) has undertaken several measures, including an investment of about Rs 200-crore in infrastructure development, to strengthen its academic and training ecosystem, a government official said. The institute has also launched new programmes, modernized its facilities, and achieved significant milestones in media education and training, IIMC Registrar Nimish Rustagi said. He added that the institute, which has been declared a 'Deemed to be University', launched two MA programmes - Media Business Studies and Strategic Communication - in August with an intake of 80 students. "The year 2024 marked a remarkable focus on modernising and upgrading the institution's infrastructure. The Indian Institute of Mass Communication (IIMC), a leading institution for Journalism and Mass Communication, has been granted the status of a deemed university, empowering it to award degrees rather than just diplomas, officials said on Wednesday. "The IIMC has been declared as deemed-to-be-university under distinct category. The declaration extends to IIMC New Delhi and its five regional campuses located in Jammu (Jammu & Kashmir), Amravati (Maharashtra), Aizawl (Mizoram), Kottayam (Kerala), and Dhenkanal (Odisha). With this new status, IIMC is now authorised to offer degrees, including doctoral degrees," an official said. President Droupadi Murmu on Thursday inaugurated various education-related projects in Mizoram, including two girls' hostels, a government college and the permanent campus of Indian Institute of Mass Communication (IIMC) here. Addressing the 17th convocation ceremony of Mizoram University (MZU), Murmu, who is on a two-day maiden visit to the northeastern state, urged students to use the knowledge and skills they have gained for the progress of the society and the nation. The protest against high cost of education spread from Jawaharlal Nehru University to the neighbouring Indian Institute of Mass Communication on Tuesday, where students agitated against the "unaffordable" fee structure, claiming the IIMC administration has turned a "blind eye" to their issues. The students said their protest was against the high tuition fee and "unruly" hostel and mess charges, considering IIMC is a publicly funded institute. Astha Savyasachi, a student of English Journalism at IIMC, said Rs 1,68,500 for a ten-month course in addition to hostel and mess charges is unaffordable for poor and middle-class students. She said students have to leave the course after the first semester because of this.
