BJP asks govt, EC to note TMC MLA's statement on 'Bangladeshi' immigrants

The BJP leadership in Bengal on Friday urged the union home ministry and Election Commission to take cognizance of comments by a TMC MLA who allegedly asked party workers to ensure that only those 'Bangladeshi' immigrants in the state who support the ruling party, find a place in the voters' list. The BJP said such comments from an elected representative are detrimental to national security. A video of a West Bengal MLA allegedly asking TMC workers to ensure that only those Bangladeshi immigrants who support the ruling party in the state find a place in the voters' list, which is being circulated on social media has created a controversy in the state. The draft electoral roll revision is underway in the state and the rest of the country. In the purported video, Bardhaman Dakshin MLA Khokan Das is heard saying, "Many new people are coming...they are from Bangladesh. Many of these people vote for BJP based on Hindu sentiments. Canada to welcome 500,000 immigrants a year by 2025 to solve labour crisis

Canada has unveiled plans for a big increase in the number of immigrants entering the country, with a goal of seeing 500,000 people arrive each year by 2025 as it seeks to address a critical labour shortage. Immigration Minister Sean Fraser revealed the new plan on Tuesday. The new plan envisions a flood of new arrivals that will see 465,000 people come in from outside the country in 2023, rising to 500,000 in 2025. By comparison, the immigration department says 405,000 permanent residents were admitted last year. Most of those new arrivals will be what are known as economic ...

'Maha Police propose seeking detention facility for overstaying foreigners'

The police department has moved a proposal with the Maharashtra government for setting up a detention facility for foreigners overstaying in the state, officials said on Saturday. Most of the foreign nationals, who stayed back in India after the expiry of their visas, are from poor countries in the African continent and also from neighbouring Bangladesh. Many of them are involved in drug trafficking syndicates and other criminal activities, an official said. This is the second time that the police are pursuing the proposal for a detention centre for such people, he said. Earlier, a detention centre was proposed in Navi Mumbai but the plan didn't materialise. This issue was discussed at the government level three years ago when the protests regarding the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and the National Register of Citizens (NRC) were on. Now, with the new proposal for setting up a detention centre, the police have identified the location and are waiting for the government's final n
