Indian airspace getting more users, need to adapt new tech, says official

Emphasising the need for ways to further streamline air traffic movements in the Indian airspace, Civil Aviation Secretary Vumlunmang Vualnam on Saturday suggested that air traffic controllers should look at the use of new technologies such as generative artificial intelligence. He was speaking at the 40th Asia Pacific Regional Meeting (APRM) of the International Federation of Air Traffic Controllers' Associations (IFATCA), hosted by the Air Traffic Controllers' Guild (India), in the national capital. The three-day meeting, with the theme 'Safety in Future Air Traffic Management', began on Saturday. Domestic air traffic rises 5.7% to 13.1 mn in August: Official data

Indian airlines carried 1.31 crore passengers in August, an increase of 5.7 per cent compared to the year-ago period, according to official data released on Friday. In August 2023, carriers had flown 1.24 crore domestic passengers while in July this year, the count stood at 1.29 crore. The report released by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) showed that last month, flight delays impacted 1,79,744 passengers with airlines shelling out around Rs 2.44 crore towards facilitation. As many as 38,599 passengers were affected by flight cancellations and carriers spent about Rs 1.14 crore for compensation and facilities. "The overall cancellation rate of scheduled domestic airlines for the month of August 2024 has been 0.83 per cent," the report said. A total of 728 passengers were denied boarding and the amount spent towards compensation and facilities in this regard was Rs 77.96 lakh. Kempegowda International Airport has witnessed the highest-ever annual passenger traffic and cargo numbers, with a total of 37.53 million passengers traversing through its terminals and 4,39,524 metric tonne of cargo passing through the airport during the financial year 2023-24. Air passenger traffic in India likely to reach 300 mn by 2030: Scindia

The number of domestic passengers in India is expected to surge to 300 million annually by 2030 from 153 million in 2023, Union Civil Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia said on Thursday. Speaking at the inaugural session of Wings India 2024, a civil aviation conclave and exhibition here, Scindia also said the number of airports, and waterports will increase to over 200 from the existing 149 in the country. With 300 million passengers a year in 2030, India's aviation penetration would be at 10 to 15 per cent and still be a potential market. He noted that the domestic air passenger traffic witnessed 15 per cent growth CAGR while that of international 6.1 per cent in the last decade. In the last 15 years, domestic cargo witnessed a growth of 60 per cent international at 53 per cent. Union Minister of State for Civil Aviation General VK Singh and Telangana Minister K Venkat Reddy also spoke on the occasion.

DGCA implements watch duty time limitation for air traffic controllers

In a "significant" move, aviation watchdog DGCA on Thursday said regulations for watch duty time limitations and rest requirements for air traffic controllers have been implemented at 57 airports, including Amritsar, Coimbatore, Patna and Imphal. The implementation of the norms will ensure that air traffic controllers will get adequate rest while carrying out their duties. The regulations regarding 'Watch Duty Time Limitation (WDTL) and rest requirements for Air Traffic Controllers (ATCOs)' are being implemented at the 57 airports from Thursday, DGCA said in a release. According to the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), the norms are modelled on ICAO regulations and based on the country's national, social and cultural contexts, coupled with scientifically valid, optimal duty time limit for ATCOs. Domestic air passenger traffic rises 11% to 11.6 mn in Nov: DGCA data

India's domestic passenger traffic rose 11.06 per cent to 116 lakh in November over the year-ago period, according to the latest data from aviation regulator DGCA. In November 2021, the air passenger traffic stood at 105.16 lakh. The data showed that domestic carriers carried 116.79 lakh passengers in November, higher than 114.07 lakh recorded in October. After being severely hit by the coronavirus pandemic, the country's civil aviation sector is on the recovery path and in recent days, daily domestic air traffic on an average is more than 4 lakh. In November, no-frills carrier IndiGo carried more than half (55.7 per cent) of the total domestic traffic at 65.01 lakh passengers, followed by Vistara at 9.3 per cent.
