India, Bangladesh hold minister-level meet on river water sharing treaties

India and Bangladesh on Thursday discussed issues related to water-sharing treaties of Teesta, Ganga and other rivers at a minister-level meeting of the Joint Rivers Commission (JRC), Union Jal Shakti Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat said. Bangladesh Minister of State for Water Resources Zaheed Farooque led a 17-member delegation at the ministerial talks with his Indian counterpart Shekhawat. "Attended the 38th India-Bangladesh ministerial level Joint Rivers Commission meeting at New Delhi. Bangladesh's Minister for Water Resources Mr. Zaheed Farooque attended it along with their 17-member delegation. "Issues related to water-sharing treaties of various rivers, including Teesta and Ganga were discussed," Shekhawat tweeted. Fisherman shot dead in Assam near Bangladesh border, locals blame BSF

A fisherman was killed along the India-Bangladesh border in Assam's South Salmara district with locals alleging that he was shot by BSF personnel, police said on Thursday. The incident happened on Wednesday night in Gudoli village when Maniruzzaman, the fisherman, was out to lay nets for fishing, they said. The injured fisherman collapsed and died on the way back to his home, South Salmara's Deputy Superintendent of Police (Border) Saifur Ali told reporters. The villagers have alleged that the firing was done by BSF personnel, he said. Police went to the BSF camp for investigations, Ali said. "The BSF, however, has not admitted that the firing was done by their personnel. We are conducting an investigations and exploring all angles," he said. Tension prevailed in the district over the killing and security has been beefed up in the border villages, police said. Cattle smuggling: CBI freezes Rs 17-cr FDs belonging to Anubrata, family

The CBI has frozen fixed deposits worth Rs 16.97 crore allegedly belonging to TMC leader Anubrata Mondal and his family members in connection with a case of cattle smuggling across Indo-Bangladesh boder, officials said Wednesday. The agency detected the fixed deposits during its continuing probe in the case, they said. The CBI on Wednesday visited Mondal's Nichupatti residence in Bolpur to question his daughter but left within 10 minutes after Sukanya refused to talk to them. The agency had arrested Mondal last Thursday from his residence after he skipped his scheduled appearance before the central probe agency twice in three days, an official said. The CBI has alleged that Vikas Mishra, brother of absconding TMC leader Vinay Mishra, and Mondal provided protection to associates of alleged cattle smuggler Enamul Haq who used to buy animals at a market in Ilambazar, the officials said.
