NSD outreach centre to be established in Bhubaneswar for theatre growth

The Odisha government has approved a proposal for establishment of an outreach centre of the National School of Drama (NSD) in Bhubaneswar, state minister Suryabanshi Suraj said. In the initial phase, it will operate temporarily at the Guru Kelucharan Mohapatra Odissi Research Centre in Bhubaneswar. The outreach centre of NSD marks a prestigious milestone for Odisha, offering a golden opportunity for students aspiring to build careers in theatre and acting, said Suraj, Odisha's Minister for Odia Language, Literature, and Culture. The minister emphasised that the outreach centre of NSD in Bhubaneswar will play a significant role in promoting and expanding Odia theatre, bringing regional narratives and traditional drama into the national and global spotlight. 128 artists to receive Sangeet Natak Akademi awards for 2019, 2020, 2021

The Sangeet Natak Akademi on Friday announced the list of 10 Akademi fellows and 128 artists who will receive the prestigious Akademi Puraskar for 2019, 2020 and 2021. The National Academy of Music, Dance and Drama elects eminent personalities in the field of performing arts as Akademi Fellows. The fellows are: Bharatnatyam dancer Saroja Vaidyanathan, Kathakali exponent Sadanam Krishnan Kutty, Manipuri dancer Darshana Jhaveri, classical vocalist Chhannu Lal Mishra, Carnatic clarinet player AKC Natarajan, tabla player Swapan Chaudhuri, classical singer Malini Rajurkar, Carnatic and Hindustani musician TV Gopalakrishnan, folk singer Teejan Bai, and musicologist Bharat Gupt. "The fellowship of the Akademi is the most prestigious and rare honour, which is restricted to 40 at any given time. Popular comic-actor Raju Srivastava dies after 41 days in Delhi hospital

Celebrated comedian-actor Raju Srivastava died on Wednesday after over 40 days of hospitalisation here, said his brother Dipoo Srivastava. He was 58. Raju Srivastava suffered a heart attack on August 10 while working out at a hotel here. He was rushed to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) and underwent angioplasty. Since then, he was on the ventilator and never gained consciousness. "I got a call from the family about half-an-hour ago saying he is no more. It is really unfortunate news. He was fighting in the hospital for over 40 days," Dipoo Srivastava told PTI. Raju Srivastava was declared dead at 10.20 am, according to hospital sources. Eminent Tabla player Pandit Anindya Chatterjee has declined to receive the Padma Shri honour. Chatterjee is the second person from Bengal's vibrant musical world who was offered the Padma award this year and refused it. The eminent percussionist, who has been 'jugal bandis' (duets) with classical maestros like Pandit Ravi Shankar, Ustad Amjad Ali Khan and Ustad Ali Akbar Khan said on Wednesday he had recieved a phone call from Delhi on Tuesday seeking his consent to accepting the honour. "However I politely declined. I said thank you but I am not ready to receive Padma Shri at this phase of my career. I have passed that phase," Chatterjee who received the Sangeet Natak Akademi award in 2002 said.
