Kota pressure cooker: No friends, every aspirant a competitor, say experts

There are no friends but only competitors in the country's coaching capital popularly known as "Kota factory", say students and experts as the government struggles to keep a check on the spate of suicides among engineering and medical aspirants. Authorities say 20 students preparing for competitive exams in Kota have ended their lives so far in 2023 -- highest for any year. Last year, the figure was 15. Battling with packed schedules, cut-throat competition, constant pressure to do better, burden of parents' expectations and homesickness, students say they often find themselves alone with no one to talk to and share their feelings with. Experts warn that parents also see friendships as potential distractions for their wards and discourage them to make friends when they are here for coaching. "There is no concept of friendship here...there are only competitors. Every student sitting next to you is seen as an additional burden to fight with. Unlike schools and colleges, nobody shares

IIT Indore develops low-cost camera in collaboration with Nasa, Caltech

The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Indore in collaboration with the NASA-Caltech from the US and Sweden's University of Gothenburg has developed a low-cost camera setup which can provide multispectral imaging of four chemical species in a flame using single DSLR camera. Using only a single DSLR camera, it can simultaneously capture multiple spectral three-dimensional images of four chemical species in a flame, whereas earlier scientific imaging required a complex system with four cameras, said Devendra Deshmukh, professor with the IIT Indore's Department of Mechanical Engineering. It would come in handy for the study of combustion of fuels which in turn can lead to improvement in combustion engines to make them more efficient and reduce carbon emissions, researchers believe. The picture of the four chemical species present in a flame can be clicked together in complete detail with this smart camera, a professor of IIT Indore involved in the research told PTI. Union ministers test 'BharOS' operating system developed by IIT-Madras

Union ministers Dharmendra Pradhan and Ashwini Vaishnaw successfully tested "BharOS", an indigenous operating system developed by IIT Madras, on Tuesday. "Poor people of the country will be the main beneficiary of a strong, indigenous, dependable and self-reliant digital infrastructure.
