I-Day: 1,082 police personnel given medals for gallantry, good service

A total of 1,082 police personnel from CAPFs and state forces have been awarded various categories of service medals, including for gallant action, on the occasion of Independence Day, an official statement said Sunday. The decorations include 347 police medal for gallantry (PMG), 87 President's police medal for distinguished service and 648 police medals for meritorious service. Out of the 347 gallantry awards, 204 personnel are being awarded for their gallant action in Jammu and Kashmir, 80 for displaying bravery in Left Wing Extremism or Naxal violence affected areas and 14 personnel for showing bravery in North-East Region, the Union home ministry said. The maximum gallantry medals at 109 have been received by the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) followed by 108 to the J&K Police, 19 to the Border Security Force (BSF) and six each to the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) and Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB). The Nuh police on Wednesday arrested the truck driver who had mowed down a Haryana DSP probing illegal mining. Sabbir, alias Mittar, the key accused in the case, was arrested from Rajasthan's Bharatpur district. He was arrested following the questioning of Ikkar, another accused in the case. Pilgrims and tourists have been barred from crossing over to Kashmir from Banihal area of Ramban district after 3.30 pm, the cut-off time, due to security concerns, an officer said on Friday. The measure has been taken by the police in view of unregistered Amarnath pilgrims travelling in the guise of tourists to the Valley, thereby causing security problems in view of heightened security threats, the officer said. "Unregistered pilgrims, travelling without RIFD (radio-frequency identification) and devotees travelling in the guise of tourists will not be allowed to move to Kashmir from Navyug tunnel in (Banihal area) after cut-off time of 3.30 pm," Ramban Superintendent of Police Mohita Sharma told reporters here. Policeman, civilian shot dead in separate incidents in J-K: Report

Militants Wednesday shot dead a police officer and a civilian within minutes of each other in two separate incidents in Kashmir valley, officials said. While the police assistant sub-inspector (ASI) was shot dead in Bijbehara area of south Kashmir's Anantnag district, the civilian was gunned down in Nawakadal near Eidgah locality of the city, they said. "At about 6 pm, terrorists fired at & critically injured a civilian namely Rouf Ahmad near his residence in Nawakadal area of Srinagar," a police official said. He said the injured person was shifted to SMHS hospital here, where he succumbed to the injuries. Over 20,000 police officials transferred within 2 years of posting in 2019

Over 20,000 police officials across states and union territories were transferred in 2019 within a period of two years of their posting, with more than 70 per cent of the shunting happening at the station house officer (SHO) level, according to official data. Altogether, there were 20,637 transfers of police officials during 2019 within two years of their field posting, the Bureau of Police Research & Development (BPR&D) stated in its latest data on police organisations updated till January 1, 2020. Officials included in the tally are SHOs, deputy superintendents of police (DySPs), assistant commissioners (ACPs), district SPs (SPs), deputy commissioners (DCPs), deputy inspector general (DIGs), inspector general of range (IG Range), additional CPs, and police commissioners who were transferred within a year or between one and two years of their posting.
