Over 20,000 police officials transferred within 2 years of posting in 2019

Over 20,000 police officials across states and union territories were transferred in 2019 within a period of two years of their posting, with more than 70 per cent of the shunting happening at the station house officer (SHO) level, according to official data. Altogether, there were 20,637 transfers of police officials during 2019 within two years of their field posting, the Bureau of Police Research & Development (BPR&D) stated in its latest data on police organisations updated till January 1, 2020. Officials included in the tally are SHOs, deputy superintendents of police (DySPs), assistant commissioners (ACPs), district SPs (SPs), deputy commissioners (DCPs), deputy inspector general (DIGs), inspector general of range (IG Range), additional CPs, and police commissioners who were transferred within a year or between one and two years of their posting. Police personnel on duty surpass sanctioned strength by 35%: Data

West Bengal, Punjab, Bihar and Jammu and Kashmir have the maximum numbers of people getting police protection, even as the all-India figure reduced by nearly nine per cent in 2019, according to official data. Also, the number of police personnel put on protection duty in 2018 and 2019 for ministers, MPs, MLAs, judges, bureaucrats, etc., outnumbered their sanctioned strength for the job by around 35 per cent, showed the latest data released by the Bureau of Police Research & Development (BPR&D). The number of people getting police protection across India stood at 19,467 in 2019 and 21,300 in 2018 -- a reduction of 1,833 (or 8.7 per cent), the BPR&D stated in its latest data on police organisations updated till January 1, 2020. The number of police personnel sanctioned for protection duty in 2019 was 43,556, whereas 66,043 personnel were deployed for the job, the data showed. Over 500,000 police posts vacant; women less than 9% of total force: Report

There were over five lakh vacant posts across the country in the police force, while women constituted less than 9 per cent of the total personnel working by 2019, a new government data stated on Wednesday. The total sanctioned police force was 25,95,435 while the actual strength was 20,67,270 and 5,28,165 vacant posts, said the annual data obtained and prepared by the Bureau of Police Research and Development (BPR&D), which works under the Union Home Ministry. Home Minister Amit Shah on Wednesday released the 'Data on Police Organisations as on January 1, 2019' in the presence of BPR&D Director V S K Kaumudi. According to the data, the strength of women in police force was 1,85,696, that is 8.98 per cent of the total force. The number of women personnel increased by 9.25 per cent over the previous year, it stated. 1,50,690 new personnel were recruited in police in 2018, the BPR&D data showed.
