ISRO to transition out from manufacturing operational space systems

The new Indian Space Policy, made public on Thursday, has said the Indian Space Research Organisation shall transition out from manufacturing operational space systems and focus its energies on research and development in advanced technologies. The Indian Space Policy - 2023, which was approved by the Cabinet Committee on Security on April 6, also permits non-government entities to undertake end-to-end activities in the space sector through the establishment and operation of space objects, ground-based assets and related services such as communication, remote sensing and navigation. The policy also states that Indian consumers of space technology or services -- such as communication, remote sensing, data services and launch services -- whether from the public or the private sector, shall be free to directly procure them from any source. The government unveiled space sector reforms in 2020 by opening up the sector for private participation and the new space policy, published on the .

Chairperson of Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) S Somanath on Thursday said about 100 start-ups were registered with the space agency. Addressing a plenary session here at the Bengaluru Tech Summit 2022 on R&D of India Innovation for Global Impact,' he said ISRO has signed memoranda of understanding with companies to work closely, which include hand-holding in space technology and building processes from start to finish. He said a number of companies have the potential to become big players in the space sector and ISRO was playing as a facilitator and helping in building technologies. He said out of the 100 start-ups at least 10 were working on developing satellites and rockets. Somanath announced that Chandrayaan-3 mission would be in orbit in a few months and that ISRO was working with NASA. India needs a thriving space sector, the ISRO chairman said adding the country was looking at how to expand the sector in the days to come. We have to work on cutting-edge ...

First test flight of Gaganyaan mission in February next year: ISRO official

The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) will start a series of test flights for India's maiden human space flight mission from February next year, a senior official said here on Thursday. The space agency also plans to deploy the heavy lift Chinook helicopter and the C-17 Globemaster transport aircraft for testing the crew module, which will carry astronauts into the orbit for three days as part of the Gaganyaan human space flight mission, R Umamaheshwaran, Director of ISRO's Human Space Flight Centre said. Addressing the India Space Congress here, he said scientists at ISRO had completed the design of the Environment Control System, which will ensure ambient living conditions for astronauts in the crew service module when they are orbiting the earth. At least 17 different tests are planned by ISRO next year before it carries out the unmanned space flight in December next year. Prime Minister Narendra Modi had announced the Gaganyaan Mission in his Independence Day address in

Isro successfully tests hybrid motor, eyes new rocket propulsion system

The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has successfully tested a hybrid motor, potentially paving the way for a new propulsion system for the forthcoming launch vehicles. The 30 kN hybrid motor tested at ISRO Propulsion Complex (IPRC) at Mahendragiri in Tamil Nadu on Tuesday is scalable and stackable, the Bengaluru-headquartered space agency said. The test was supported by ISRO's Liquid Propulsion Systems Centre (LPSC). The motor used Hydroxyl-terminated polybutadiene (HTPB) as fuel and liquid oxygen (LOX) as the oxidiser. Unlike solid-solid or liquid-liquid combinations, a hybrid motor uses solid fuel and liquid oxidiser, it was noted. "Today's (Tuesday's) test of a flight equivalent 30 kN hybrid motor demonstrated ignition and sustained combustion for the intended duration of 15 seconds. The motor performance was satisfactory", an ISRO statement said. The use of liquids facilitates throttling, and the control over the flow rate of LOX enables the re-start capability, it
