DU's Executive Council passes resolution on teacher-student ratio

Delhi University's Executive Council (EC) on Friday gave its nod to a controversial notification on the teacher-student ratio for lectures and tutorials, despite opposition from some of its members. Vice Chancellor (VC) Yogesh Singh used his emergency powers in the matter, according to an EC member. In a notification issued last month, the university had capped the class size for lectures and tutorials at 60 and 30 respectively. The resolution was passed in Friday's meeting despite opposition from some of the members. The VC used his emergency powers to pass the resolution, the EC member cited above said. Three members of the EC disapproved of the use of emergency powers by Singh. "The use of Emergency Powers on a policy matter is a subversion of Statutory Bodies. It is a misuse of the powers given by Statute 11 (G) which is an enabling clause to deal with unforeseen circumstances. "Even as the meetings of the Academic Council and the Executive Council were already scheduled, DU

Large difference in students' performance across boards a challenge: Study

Large difference in performance of students from various boards, significant variation in pass percentages and no level playing field for students in terms of standard are among the challenges identified by the Ministry of Education in an assessment of classes 10 and 12 exam results. The assessment has also pointed out that top five boards (Uttar Pradesh, CBSE, Maharashtra, Bihar and West Bengal) cover about 50 per cent of students and the rest 50 per cent students are enrolled in 55 boards across the country. The study noted that the deviation in performance might be due to different patterns followed by boards and convergence of secondary and higher secondary boards into a single board in a state can help students. The assessment also found that different syllabi followed by boards have created barriers for national level entrance tests. According to School Education Secretary, Sanjay Kumar, the difference between pass percentages of various states has led the education ministry

Indian group urges UK to remove overseas students from migration stats

An Indian diaspora-led students' organisation on Friday urged the UK government to remove international students from the country's overall immigration statistics amid unconfirmed reports that Prime Minister Rishi Sunak may be considering a crackdown on foreigners granted study visas. According to some UK media reports, Sunak is mulling a crackdown on foreign students bringing dependents and studying so-called low-quality degrees at mediocre UK universities after the country's net migration figures hit record levels. Downing Street has indicated that all options to bring overall migrant numbers down are on the table. The National Indian Students and Alumni Union (NISAU) UK, which campaigns for streamlined provisions for Indian students studying in the UK, said any move to arbitrarily rank universities would prove counterproductive in the long run. Students who are in the UK temporarily, should not be counted as migrants, said NISAU UK Chair Sanam Arora. International students, of .
