Guv seeks resignation of VCs of 9 varsities in Kerala by Monday morning

Armed with a recent Supreme Court order quashing appointment of the vice chancellor (VC) of APJ Abdul Kalam Technological University here for being contrary to UGC regulations, Kerala Governor Arif Mohammed Khan on Sunday sought resignations of VCs of nine varsities in the state. The nine VCs include that of the APJ Abdul Kalam Technological University, according to a tweet by Kerala Raj Bhavan on behalf of the Governor. "Upholding the verdict of Hon'ble SupremeCourt dt 21.10.22 in Civil Appeal Nos.7634-7635 of 2022(@ SLP(c)Nos.21108-21109 of 2021), Hon'ble Governor Shri Arif Mohammed Khan has directed Vice Chancellors of 9 varsities in Kerala to tender resignation: PRO,KeralaRajBhavan," the tweet, accompanied by a list of the varsities, said. The Raj Bhavan said Khan, as Chancellor of Universities in the state, also directed that the resignations reach him by 11.30 am on Monday. DU announces first list of admissions to undergraduate programmes

Delhi University announced on Wednesday the much-awaited first list of seat allocations for admission to undergraduate programmes. This marks the commencement of the third and last phase of the admission process. The list was initially slotted to be announced on October 18. However, it was deferred to Wednesday. "The first round of the Common Seat Allocation System (CSAS) of the University of Delhi has been released today," said DU Dean of Admission Haneet Gandhi. The list has not be issued in the public domain and the candidate will only be able to see the college and courses allotted to them on their dashboard. The candidate will have to click on "Accept Allocation" under user action tab. "On receiving the 'Approval from the College Principal', student will proceed to pay the fee to confirm the admission. Over 217,000 register for DU UG admissions; dip of 70,000 from last year

More than 2.17 lakh students have registered for Delhi University's undergraduate programmes this academic session, down by nearly 70,000 as compared to the last year. Last year, the university saw more than 2.87 lakh registrations, while in 2020, 3.53 lakh aspirants applied for undergraduate programmes at the university. This year, the university is admitting students through Common University Entrance Test (CUET) scores instead of their Class 12 marks. Last year, registration was open between August 2 and August 31. However, this year registration portal was open on September 12 and closed on October 13. The DU began admissions for over 70,000 seats last month. However, a university official said the number is "not low" but similar to the last year. According to data provided by the university, as many as 2,17,653 aspirants have registered for its undergraduate courses till Thursday, the last day for applying. The Delhi University (DU) issued an academic calendar for the first semester students on Wednesday announcing that the classes will begin on November 2 with a four-day break between the first and second semesters. The first semester will start in November 2022 and end in March 2023 and the second semester will be from March to July. Notably, the first semester will begin even before the third round of the admission process for undergraduate courses commences. This year, the university is admitting students through Common University Entrance Test (CUET) scores instead of their Class 12 marks. On September 12, the university released its admission-cum-allocation policy -- Common Seat Allocation System (CSAS). SC upholds HC verdict to set aside re-appointment of Calcutta University VC

The Supreme Court on Tuesday upheld a Calcutta High Court verdict setting aside the re-appointment of Sonali Chakravarti Banerjee as vice-chancellor of the Calcutta University. A bench of Justices DY Chandrachud and Hima Kohli said the impugned high court order is correct in law and facts and does not require interference. It said the State cannot have done away with the clause requiring approval of the the West Bengal governor, who is the chancellor of the university. On September 13, the Calcutta High Court set aside the reappointment of Banerjee as vice-chancellor of the Calcutta University, holding that the West Bengal government has no authority to do so as per provisions of the varsity's Act. Student commits suicide at Punjab's university; peers protest on campus

A first-year student of a private university in Punjab's Phagwara committed suicide, triggering a protest by fellow students on the campus, police said on Wednesday. The student, who was from Kerala and was studying B.Design at Lovely Professional University (LPU), took the extreme step on Tuesday, they said. The last date to apply for diploma programs and BA in digital media and design at Delhi Skill and Entrepreneurship University is July 27, the varsity said on Monday. JNU to resume physical classes for all courses from August 3

Jawaharlal Nehru University will resume in-person classes for students of all courses from the next month, according to an official notification issued on Wednesday. The notification asked students to attend physical classes from August 3. JNU, which was closed in March 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, reopened in February to resume offline classes for all students except those in the first year. However, the students had alleged that several centres, including the School of International Studies (SIS), did not resume offline classes. Students groups including the All India Students' Union and the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) held protests calling for the resumption of offline classes in the SIS. The notification issued on Wednesday said, "It has been decided to start classes in offline mode in the university by 3rd of August, 2022.
