Delhi airport expects 72 mn passengers, expanded T1 to be functional in May

The Delhi airport is expected to handle more than 72 million passengers in the current fiscal ending March 31, the highest-ever annual traffic, and the expanded Terminal 1 is likely to be operational in May, its CEO Videh Kumar Jaipuriar said on Sunday. The expanded T1 terminal, the capacity of which has increased to 40 million from 17 million, was inaugurated virtually by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday. Now, its total area has tripled to 2,06,950 square metres. The Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) in the national capital, operated by the Delhi International Airport Ltd (DIAL), now has an annual passenger handling capacity of 100 million spread across three terminals -- T1, T2 and T3. A female business class passenger on an Air India flight to London was deboarded at the Delhi airport following an argument with cabin crew members this week. The incident happened on flight AI 161 on March 5 and the passenger involved was a senior corporate executive, according to sources in the know. In a statement, an Air India spokesperson said a passenger travelling in business class was off boarded on the advice of the captain following some argument with members of the crew before the scheduled pushback. "Following the off boarding, flight AI 161 departed after a delay of about an hour. The passenger who was off boarded was travelling for some compelling reasons and was accommodated on a subsequent flight following a written assurance," the spokesperson said. The Delhi airport saw diversions of at least three flights on Wednesday morning due to bad weather, according to an official. Several flights were also delayed at the Indira Gandhi International Airport in the national capital, he said. A total of five flights were diverted to various destinations between 9.30 pm on Tuesday and 7 am on Wednesday, the official said. Out of these, three were diverted to Jaipur in Rajasthan and one each to Ahmedabad in Gujarat and Mumbai in Maharashtra, the official said on Wednesday. Dense fog enveloped several parts of the national capital resulting in low visibility conditions on Wednesday morning.

Delhi airport sees 9 flight diversions as ops disrupted by foggy weather

At least nine flights were diverted at the Delhi airport on Wednesday due to bad weather. An official said three flights of SpiceJet and one flight of Air India were diverted to Jaipur between 0900 and 1200 hrs. Late in the evening, Vistara said five of its flights that were to land at the Delhi airport were diverted. At least five flights of Vistara were diverted due to bad weather in the national capital. In a series of posts on X late in the evening, the airline said the flight from Patna, Hyderabad, Bengaluru, Guwahati and Chennai to the national capital have been diverted. Three flights were diverted to Indore and one flight each to Mumbai and Jaipur. Delhi airport issued a fog update at 2225 hours. "While landing and takeoff continue at Delhi airport, flights that are not CAT III compliant may get affected," it said in a post on X. Additional checks in place for A-I passengers at Delhi airport till Nov 30

Passengers travelling on Air India flights from airports in the national capital and Punjab will be subject to additional checks, and issuance of visitor entry tickets has been stopped at the Delhi airport till November 30 amid increased threat perception, according to sources. Apart from issuance of temporary airport entry passes, entry of visitors to the terminal building of Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) have been banned till November 30, they added. The Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS) issued a circular in this regard on Monday. There will be Secondary Ladder Point Check for Air India flights at the IGIA and airports in Punjab, the sources said. Generally, it refers to checking passengers and their hand baggage just before boarding a flight. This is in addition to the primary security checks. There was no comment from Air India.
