Dombivli factory blast: Owner remanded in police custody till May 29

A court in Maharashtra's Thane district on Saturday remanded in police custody till May 29 the owner of the chemical factory in Dombivli where an explosion killed nine persons and injured more than 60. The accused, Malay Mehta (38), owner of Amudan Chemicals, was produced before the magistrate court in Kalyan, a spokesperson of the Thane city police said. The police sought Mehta's custody for 14 days and informed the court that they had to visit the factory site and find out if more persons were involved in the crime, he said. The extent of damage because of the explosion was enormous, and the police wanted to examine the role of many in the incident, the official said. Mehta's lawyer argued that the company had all the requisite permissions and followed all regulations. Rewari factory blast: Three more succumb to injuries, death toll reaches 10

Three more workers injured in a boiler blast at a spare parts manufacturing facility in Haryana's Rewari last week died on Friday, taking the death toll in the incident to 10, police said. "Two workers died during treatment at PGIMS Hospital, Rohtak while one worker died in Delhi's Safdarjung Hospital. The death toll in the incident has now risen to 10," Dharuhera police station SHO Jagdish Chand said. The blast took place at the manufacturing facility in the Dharuhera industrial area on March 16, leaving 40 workers injured, according to the police. Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini had on Wednesday met the injured at PGIMS Hospital. Saini had said he had already ordered a magisterial probe into the incident and the government would take appropriate action based on its findings. The police on Sunday had registered a case in connection with the boiler blast. The contractor and others have been booked in the case. 4 workers critical as molten metal falls on them in Gujarat steel factor

At least seven workers were injured on Sunday, four of them critically, when molten metal spilled out of a furnace and fell on them at a steel factory located in Anjar town in Gujarat's Kutch district, police said. The incident occurred in the morning when some workers were putting metal scrap in the furnace. "The molten metal spilled out of the furnace and fell on seven workers, injuring them. They were shifted to a hospital at Gandhidham. Four of them were referred to Ahmedabad for further treatment as their health condition is critical," said Superintendent of Police, Kutch (East), Sagar Bagmar.

19 workers injured as gas furnace explodes at Pune fabrication unit

As many as 19 workers were injured after a gas furnace exploded in a powder coating and fabrication unit in Maharashtra's Pune, an official said on Wednesday. The incident took place at the manufacturing set-up in the Hinjawadi area of Pimpri-Chinchwad on Tuesday evening, he said. Police said the gas furnace at the unit exploded, dispersing metal parts kept inside it in all directions. A total of 19 workers suffered burns after the hot metal parts flung from the furnace fell on them, he said. A case has been registered against the proprietor and management of the unit for alleged negligence.

Sinking town Joshimath yet to see long term land subsidence measures

Nearly four months since Joshimath made headlines as the "sinking town", the gateway to Himalayan pilgrimage sites is yet to see enough curative steps that address the land subsidence issue, environmental experts have said. People in unsafe zones have been moved to safety, cracks in the roads filled and unsafe buildings demolished but environmentalists feel long-term measures to save the town from further damage are yet to be initiated. More than 100 days have passed since the crisis reared its head in early January but cracks have still not stopped appearing in the hill town, which is situated on old landslide rubble. The cracks that appeared in buildings, roads and public facilities in Joshimath have not widened further of late but sporadic appearances of newer ones leave no room for complacency, said locals.
