ICC approves expansion of women's cricket, term of chairman to be expanded

The ICC Board has recommended changes to the term of its Chair and Independent Director to two terms of three years, which, if implemented, would mean doing away with the current three terms of two years each. The recommendation, if approved by the members, would mean that BCCI secretary Jay Shah, who is set to take over as the global cricket body's chief on December 1 this year, will head the ICC for three years, after which he can seek a second three-year term with the board's approval. The bulk of Shah's first term will overlap with his cooling off period of three years in the BCCI, which would have started in September 2025. One can be an office bearer in the Indian board for a cumulative period of 18 years with nine years in the board and an equal number of years in the state unit. However, as per the Supreme Court-approved constitution, a person needs to go for a mandatory cooling off period of three years after he has been in the BCCI or its state unit as an office bearer fo

Afghan women cricketers request ICC to set up refugee team in Australia

With the dream of once again donning the Afghanistan jersey at the international level, 17 women cricketers from the country living in self-imposed exile in Australia have written to the ICC to help set up a team, which was disbanded after the Taliban takeover in 2021. While the Afghanistan men's team has set new benchmarks and recently made it to the T20 World Cup semifinals for the first time, the women players, who were contracted to the Afghanistan Cricket Board before the Taliban takeover, sought refuge in Australia, where they hope to set up a refugee team and play international cricket. In a letter written to the global governing body, the women cricketers praised the splendid performance of the men's team in the T20 World Cup but rued that they were not getting opportunities to flourish. "We, the formerly contracted players of the Afghanistan women's team, are proud and excited by the achievements of Afghanistan at the ICC Men's T20 World Cup and wish to congratulate Rashid

IPL's impact player must be revealed at toss, says Sourav Ganguly

Former India captain and Delhi Capitals director of cricket Sourav Ganguly is in favour of continuing with the impact-player rule in IPL, but wants teams to decide their picks at the toss. The impact-player rule has become a hot topic of debate following the recently-concluded edition of IPL where scores in excess of 250 runs were notched up eight times. Ganguly added he wants the boundaries to be pushed further back in upcoming IPL editions. "I like the impact player rule. My only thing with IPL is that I just want the grounds to be a bit bigger. The fences should go a little behind," Ganguly told the media on the sidelines of the International Procurement and Supply Chain Conference organised by the Blue Ocean Corporation. "It is a great tournament. The only thing you can do with the impact player is decide before the toss, so it's a bit of skill there. "So, have the impact player revealed before because that will require a lot of skill and game plan. But, I am all for the impac

Big boost to Major League Cricket: ICC grants it List-A status in the US

The ICC has granted official List-A status to Major League Cricket matches in the US in only its second season, a move aimed at promoting the game in one of the biggest sports markets. The International Cricket Council's decision comes a week before MLC commences its second season and less than a week before the Americas host cricket's showpiece event, the T20 World Cup. The ICC's move makes MLC as the official T20 league and America's first world-class domestic tournament. "Now, every century, half-century, '?ve-for', run-out, win, loss, and championship will be documented as official career statistics in an internationally recognised format of the game," said MLC in a statement. The official status to MLC means it will provide local US players and upcoming stars of the game the opportunity for international recognition, furthering the development of domestic talent in the country. "The List-A status comes after the MLC's successful inaugural season and underscores its unwavering

Colin Munro from NZ retires from international cricket after T20 WC snub

New Zealand's Colin Munro, a bruising top-order batter, on Friday announced his retirement from international cricket after he was not included in the national team for the upcoming T20 World Cup. Munro played one Test, 57 ODIs and 65 T20Is for the Kiwis amassing a total of 3010 runs, but it was in the shortest format the left-hander made a name for himself. In T20Is, he struck runs at an impressive 156.44 and the 37-year-old remains one of the handful of players who have made upwards of 10000 runs across all T20 competitions. The Durban-born cricketer has made 10961 runs from 428 T20s, averaging 30.44 and striking at 141.25. However, Munro's final game for New Zealand came back in 2020 when he appeared in a T20I game against India at Mount Maunganui. Playing for the Black Caps has always been the biggest achievement in my playing career, said Munro in his retirement statement. The fact that I've been able to do that 123 times across all formats is something I will always be ...
