Centre asks Telangana govt to auction at least six mineral blocks by Jun 30

The mines ministry has flagged that the Telangana government failed to auction any mineral blocks in past nine years and asked the state to put at least six mines on sale by the end of this month. According to sources, geological reports of eleven blocks have been handed over to the government of Telangana for auction. These blocks consist of five iron ore mines, five limestone blocks and one manganese block. Till date not even a single block has been put up for auction by Telangana even though the mines ministry has sent repeated reminders to the state government. The process of allocating mineral blocks through auctions began in 2015. In a recent letter to the Telangana government, the mines ministry asked the state to notify a minimum of six blocks from the 11 for auction by June 30, sources said. MOIL manganese ore production grows 43% to 108,800 tonne in Apr-Nov

State-owned MOIL on Monday posted 43 per cent rise in manganese ore production at 10.88 lakh tonne (LT) during April-November 2023. It had produced 7.58 LT manganese ore during the year-ago period, MOIL said in a statement. Last month, the production was 1.62 LT, registering 35 per cent year-on-year growth over 1.20 LT in November 2022. The cumulative sale was 9.45 LT, up 52 per cent from 6.23 LT in the first eight months of the previous fiscal. In November 2023, the company reported sales of 1.01 LT as against 0.86 LT in the same month last year. During April-November 2023, the company conducted an exploratory core drilling of 49,389 metres, 2.6 times higher than 18,899 metres in the same period last year. MOIL, under Ministry of Steel, meets about 46 per cent of the total requirement of dioxide ore in the country. At present, the average annual production of manganese ore is around 1.3 million tonne.

Steel ministry panel calls for exploration of manganese ore reserves

A consultative committee on Tuesday suggested CPSEs to explore of reserves manganese ore and other minerals in states like Jharkhand, Odisha and Karnataka, an official statement said. The Consultative Committee of Parliament for Ministry of Steel also suggested for a research and development (R&D) team to be constituted to work out the possibility of usage of manganese in battery-powered vehicles. During the meeting of the committee, Steel Minister Ram Chandra Prasad Singh who is the Chairman of the body along with Minister of State (MoS) for Steel Faggan Singh Kulaste directed the CPSEs under his ministry to take up the issue of manganese ore exploration with state governments and explore possibilities of new manganese bearing areas in India, the steel ministry said.
