The government makes all efforts to ensure affordable and accessible treatment is available for cancer patients amid a rise in cases in India, Health Minister JP Nadda said on Friday. Replying to supplementary questions during Question Hour in the Lok Sabha, Nadda said the government made all efforts to ensure that affordable and accessible treatment was available to the patients. "The number of cancer cases is going up, it is increasing by almost 2.5 per cent every year," Nadda said. In men, cases of oral and lung cancer are on the up while more women are getting breast cancer, he added. More than 15.5 lakh cancer cases are being registered every year, Nadda said. "There is a list of 131 essential cancer medicines, which are in Schedule 1, (that) are monitored and (their) pricing is decided by the government. These are the commonly used medicines," Nadda said. Union Health Minister Jagat Prakash Nadda on Saturday directed food regulator FSSAI to waive a registration fee of Rs 100 for street food vendors and also stressed upon the need to create street food hubs across the country. Nadda chaired a training and awareness programme for around 1,350 street food vendors conducted by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) at Vigyan Bhawan in the national capital. Nadda directed the FSSAI to waive the registration fee of Rs 100 for street food vendors. To encourage vendors and promote more and more registrations, he said FSSAI would waive the Rs 100 registration fee for the street food vendors. At present, the FSSAI charges Rs 100 per annum as a registration fee for petty food business operators, including street food vendors, having turnover of up to Rs 12 lakh annually. Representatives of the Federation of Resident Doctors' Association have met Union Health Minister J P Nadda to discuss their concerns over medical education with a focus on the postponement of the NEET-PG exam. According to a statement, the delegation of the Federation of Resident Doctors' Association (FORDA) met the minister on Saturday. At the meeting, FORDA stressed on the importance of promptly announcing the new exam dates and conducting the exams transparently and efficiently, it said, adding the primary focus of the discussion was the postponement of the NEET-PG exam. The NEET-PG, which was scheduled to be held on June 23, was postponed a night before the entrance exam, as a "precautionary measure" in the wake of recent allegations on the integrity of certain competitive exams. The prolonged heatwave sweeping large parts of the country has claimed more lives, with 143 recorded deaths and 41,789 people suffering from suspected heatstroke between March 1 and June 20 this year, Health ministry sources said on Friday. However, the heatwave toll is expected to be higher than this as the data compiled under the National Heat-Related Illness and Death Surveillance by the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) does not have updated submissions from states. Several health facilities are also yet to upload data on number of heatwave casualties. According to the official data, on June 20 itself there have been 14 confirmed deaths due to heatstroke and nine deaths due to suspected heatstroke, taking the death toll in the March-June period to 143 from 114. Uttar Pradesh is the worst-affected, having reported 35 deaths followed by Delhi (21) and Bihar and Rajasthan (17 each), according to the data. The minister, who performed yoga at the Yamuna Sports complex on the occasion of the International Day of Yoga (IDY), noted that the United Nations General Assembly, heeding to a call by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, had made a declaration to observe June 21 every year as IDY.
