The Bombay High Court on Monday granted medical bail to Jet Airways founder Naresh Goyal, who is an accused in a money laundering case. In May this year, a single bench of Justice N J Jamadar granted interim bail to Goyal on medical grounds. Justice Jamadar on Monday made the interim order permanent. Goyal (75) is suffering from cancer and had sought bail to undergo treatment. The Enforcement Directorate (ED) had opposed his plea and said he could be admitted to a hospital of his choice and take treatment while in custody. In May, the HC granted interim bail to Goyal for a period of two months which was later extended by four weeks and then again for two months. The ED arrested Goyal in September 2023 on allegations that he had laundered money and siphoned off loans to the tune of Rs 538.62 crore given to Jet Airways by the Canara Bank. His wife Anita Goyal was arrested in November 2023 when the ED submitted its chargesheet in the case. A special court granted her bail the same
Jet Airways founder Naresh Goyal has moved the Bombay High Court seeking extension of the two-month interim medical bail granted to him earlier. On May 6, the high court had granted interim bail for two months on medical grounds to Goyal, arrested in a money laundering case by the Enforcement Directorate (ED). Goyal, 75, has now filed an application seeking extension of the same. The plea said his medical condition continues to remain poor and that he has also lost his wife to cancer on May 16. The application came up for hearing on Tuesday before a single bench of Justice Manish Pitale. The court referred to a circular issued by the high court in February, stating that the applications where earlier pleas were considered and decided by a particular judge shall be placed before the same bench. Justice Pitale directed the high court's registry department to place Goyal's application before the single bench of Justice N J Jamadar, who had granted him interim bail in May for two ...
Naresh Goyal was granted interim bail earlier this month to be with his wife; he is under arrest in a money laundering case
The Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Friday opposed the interim medical bail sought by Jet Airways founder Naresh Goyal in a money laundering case and said his stay at a private hospital could be extended for a month. Goyal has sought interim bail on medical and humanitarian grounds, citing that both he and his wife, Anita Goyal, suffered from cancer. On Friday, a single bench of Justice N J Jamadar said it would pass orders on May 6. A special court had in February refused bail to Goyal but permitted him to be admitted to a private hospital of his choice and seek medical treatment. Goyal had last week moved the high court seeking interim bail on merits and release on medical grounds. While Goyal's counsel, Harish Salve, urged the court to consider the case on humanitarian grounds, the ED's counsel, Hiten Venegaonkar, vehemently opposed the bail and said the probe agency did not have a problem if his hospitalisation was extended. Before closing the matter for orders, Justice Jamad
Medical reports did not indicate that Jet Airways founder Naresh Goyal's health would improve if he was released and he was already getting the "best possible" treatment at a hospital of his choice, a court here has said while refusing him bail. Special judge for cases under Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), M G Deshpande, on April 10 rejected the 74-year-old businessman's bail application, filed on the ground that he suffers from numerous life-threatening medical conditions. The court had, in February 2024, denied interim bail to Goyal when he sought relief on the ground that he was suffering from cancer. It, however, permitted him to undergo treatment at a hospital of his choice. Later, Goyal moved another application for bail, citing the deterioration in his health since hospitalization. He suffered from fever with chills and also had psychiatric issues, he said. The court in its detailed order, which became available on Saturday, noted that it had expressed concern .
A medical board of the state-run J J Hospital here on Friday informed a special court that private medical reports of Jet Airways founder Naresh Goyal suggest that he is suffering from "malignancy", but it needs to carry out further tests. The Enforcement Directorate (ED), which has arrested the businessman in a money laundering case, opposed his interim bail application on health grounds and suggested he could be treated at the city-based Tata Memorial Hospital. Goyal, 74, moved the court on February 15, saying he required special treatment as tests conducted by private doctors showed that he had small tumors in his intestine. M G Deshpande, judge for the Prevention of Money Laundering Act cases, then ordered setting up of a medical board by the J J Hospital to examine the reports. During the hearing on Friday, the ED submitted that the board did not give any independent opinion, but categorically stated that it needed to carry out some tests which were not available at J J ...
The superintendent of Arthur Road jail shall arrange sufficient escort at the expenses of the applicant (Goyal), the court said
Jet Airways founder Naresh Goyal, an accused in an alleged fraud of Rs 538 crore at state-run Canara Bank who is in jail for nearly three months, on Friday moved an application before a special court here seeking bail in the case. The court has asked the Enforcement Directorate (ED), probing the case, to file its reply to Goyal's plea by December 20. The 74-year-old businessman, in his plea seeking relief, has cited multiple health ailments like heart condition, prostate, orthopaedic-related issues, among others and claimed there are reasonable grounds to believe he "is not guilty. The entire investigation has been carried out only with the intention to allege and project siphoning (of funds) by the applicant for his personal benefits, said the plea filed before special PMLA court Judge M G Deshpande. From reading the complaint, it is more than clear that "false allegations have been made by the ED solely with a mala fide intention of projecting a negative image of Goyal", it ...
The Bombay High Court on Tuesday rejected the petition filed by Jet Airways founder Naresh Goyal challenging his "illegal" arrest in a money laundering case linked to bank loan default, noting that the plea was not maintainable. A division bench of Justices Revati Mohite Dere and Gauri Godse said the petition cannot be entertained and hence stands dismissed. The court said it was open for Goyal to avail of other statutory remedy under law. Goyal had filed a habeas corpus (produce the person) petition, in which he claimed that he was illegally arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in the case. Goyal in his plea claimed his arrest was illegal as it was done without following provisions of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) and also challenged orders of the special court which had remanded him in ED's custody first and thereafter to judicial custody. The bench in its order, however, noted that the 74-year-old had not raised these grounds before the special court ...

Jet Airways founder Naresh Goyal's "resistance" in diluting his stakes and "incessant siphoning off of funds for personal pecuniary gains" led to the downfall of the airline, the Enforcement Directorate said in its chargesheet filed before a court here in the alleged fraud of Rs 538 crore at the Canara Bank. The ED claimed that the airline could have survived had Goyal kept aside his "ulterior motive" and allowed professionals to make quick and strategic decisions to change the operating cash flow of the company. It alleged that Goyal blatantly siphoned off funds from the loss-making Jet Airways (India) Limited (JIL), drained it out of funds and kept on infusing money into the related entities owned by his family members, both in India and abroad. The probe agency on Tuesday filed its chargesheet against Naresh Goyal, his wife Anita Goyal and four companies - JIL, Jetair Private Limited, Jet Enterprises Private Limited and Jet Airways LLC, Dubai - in connection with the case. A special court here on Monday extended till September 14 the ED remand of Jet Airways founder Naresh Goyal, who has been arrested in a money laundering case linked to an alleged fraud of Rs 538 crore at Canara Bank. The 74-year-old businessman was produced before the special PMLA court at the end of his initial remand on Monday. The central probe agency sought his custody for another four day for further investigation in the case. The ED told the court that maximum money siphoned off has been stacked in foreign accounts and there is a person in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to look after it. Special judge for cases under PMLA, MG Deshpande, then extended Goyal's custody till September 14. The money laundering case stems from an FIR of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) ...
